Empowering Students with Resources

To ensure students had everything they needed, we made our booth informative and approachable. Posters with detailed descriptions of available positions made it easy for them to understand the roles we’re hiring for. Additionally, we put QR codes on the table to allow students to access job postings, sign-up links, and resume submission. This helped to streamline the entire application process and allow for more time to speak with students and create stronger connections with them.

Just like the previous years, the response was phenomenal! A long line of students visited our booth, and many eagerly signed up and submitted their resumes. Their engagement and excitement were absolutely overwhelming! It’s such a special moment for us to see the passion of these bright students and have the opportunity to be a part of their career.

Building Genuine Connections

The best part of the day was the meaningful conversations we had with the students. Many expressed their interest in beginning their professional journey in our company.  It was a privilege to witness their passion and to know we played a small part in helping them take the next steps in their careers.

In general, the energy of the career fair is always so powerful and wonderful to experience. Seeing the students excitedly looking at the vast potential from where to jumpstart their career is not only heartwarming but nostalgic. It’s our absolute pleasure to share in their energy and enthusiasm and help the beginnings of their careers.

To the MIIS community: thank you for organizing another outstanding career fair. As alumni, it’s always an honor for us to return to the campus we come from and participate in such an impactful event.

To the students: thank you for your curiosity, energy, and willingness to connect. We can’t wait to see how your journeys unfold in the years to come.

As we reflect on this wonderful experience, we are already getting so excited for next year’s career fair. We can’t wait to continue making connections with this wonderful community next year as well!

As many in our office at Monterey Language Services—including our director—are alumni of the Middlebury Institute, we join the career fair every year to speak to promising students and other alumni who attend the event. Those involved ranged from conference interpreters to patent translators or localization project managers, and each one spoke with lots of enthusiasm and eagerness about their experiences and hopes for the future.

The career fair takes months of planning to invite and coordinate the attending companies. When the doors initially opened at 8:00AM for preparation, we were there to set up. As in years past when the event was live, we prioritized mobility with our booth—with our information placed on the table, we were free to walk around the booth and meet attendees at eye-level. One attendee mentioned that it made them feel much more at ease to speak with company employees while we were all standing, rather than speaking with company employees who were sitting.

Our booth was a roaring success. Between the official hours of the fair, 9:00AM-12:00PM, a never-ending multitude of people came to inquire about our positions. It was a treat to meet such friendly faces and discover talent from across the globe. We hope and know that regardless of the positions these students and alumni earn, they will achieve great careers.

We would like to thank not only the attendees, but also the staff at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies for making this event such a success. We know that many, including ourselves, were eager to come to the career fair in-person after such a long time away, and we think that it could not have been better. Thank you.

It was quite interesting and enlightening to hear students’ stories. They come from all over the world and have incredibly diverse backgrounds, both personally and professionally. Many students have come to MIIS to begin their careers in the language industry, and show clear excitement for their current course of study and potential career paths. Other students already have years of experience in translation or interpretation, and have come to MIIS to hone their skills in a certain specialty or even to change their career trajectory entirely, for example by moving from a linguist to a project manager. Whatever the case may be, we were happy to connect with these talented people.

Students at MIIS, whether they are studying Conference Interpretation, Translation and Interpretation, or Translation and Localization Management all share a passion for languages and a keen desire to put what they are learning at school to work. We are glad to see that so many of these young professionals share our goal of bridging the world’s languages and cultures.

We are always looking for talented freelance translators and interpreters. We are also looking for Office and Project Assistants. During the rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus, Monterey Language Services is poised for action – we have years of experience working remotely. For us, every challenge, downturn, or recession is an opportunity to reflect on what we can do to improve and move up to the next level. While most people and companies are focusing on the tasks at hand or cost cutting, we are thinking about what our contributions to the future would be and if we will be ready when our clients need us. Now is indeed a good time to think about all of this, and try to figure out how we can make better contributions to the environment we are in and to the people who we care about. We don’t lose faith in a crisis, and we believe those who survive the crisis will stand out when the crisis is over. To us, our career is a long journey. What’s most important is that we are ready to help when our help is needed, and staying connected to help each other out in a time like now.

The majority of students told us that they shared our values for bridging the language gap between diverse communities and industries. Indeed, the team at Monterey Language Services feels very grateful to have the opportunity to serve people and society by providing translation and interpretation services every day at work.

Students’ professional experience consisted of internships and volunteer work ranging from medical interpretation in hospitals to technical translation on important topics such as oncology, nuclear energy, manufacturing, and IT.

Students had all sorts of questions about internships and the possibilities for work at regional and international levels that Monterey Language Services offers. Many of them had diligently done research and knew about our upcoming project management and interpretation vacancies. They were impressed by the numerous opportunities offered by our company and admired our community involvement. After a very concentrated exchange of ideas, they left our booth feeling very hopeful in the future of the translation industry and our company’s role in it.

This year we’re doing it a little differently!

Of course we’ll be collecting resumes, talking to students, and describing our exciting internship opportunities, but we also want to make it a fun event and help students shed some stress – that’s why we’ve decided to really put the “fair” in “career fair!” We’ll be giving out raffle tickets at the Monterey Language Services booth, with a $25 gift card prize for each of our three winners!

Nervous about talking to us as employers? Don’t be, relax, and come on up! We’re serious about our work, but easy-going in person. We want students to feel comfortable and relaxed at our booth: that’s the best way to meet and get to know new people, and we want to meet you and hear about your unique skills and experience. It may be business as usual at the other booths, but with Monterey Language Services it should be an unforgettable time for everyone who steps up.

Tate Miller, Dean at the Center for Advising and Career Services at Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS), conveyed to us that many students had wonderful conversations with us at the MIIS job fair. This brought back a lot of fond memories. The feeling is mutual; we also had a fantastic time talking to the students. Among the interesting topics we discussed:

– how a translation and interpretation company like Monterey Language Services is operated

– how all of the languages are supported at Monterey Language Services

– how to distinguish yourself from your peers in a competitive job market

– how medical interpretation involves human life and feelings that go beyond technical interpretation

– how instant messaging has changed the way language is processed in our minds

– how something like music is related to language and translation

We consider all of the students our colleagues. They showed us a lot of talent in their conversation and works, enriched us with their different perspectives and strengths, and we were very happy to share our experiences from 12 years working in the translation and interpretation industry. In fact, we enjoyed talking with the students so much that we were the last table at the career fair and at the reception the night before. Like the last table remaining after a busy night in a lively restaurant or at a good party, the one that stays the longest laughs and enjoys themselves the most!

In short, we care about each individual encounter. To us, it is not only a process of submitting and collecting resumes; instead, we always seek to bridge different hearts, minds, and ideas, whether participating in an event like the MIIS Career Fair or connecting at the workplace. As a result of this conviction, students’ passion, energy, fun, and laughter is seen coming out.
