To accommodate very large audiences in cross-cultural communication, the usual method of simultaneous interpretation with all the necessary equipment may prove too expensive. In its place, Monterey Language Services presents a cost-effective solution that addresses clients’ needs: the Instant Translation method, in which a meeting is presented in one language with an instant translation displayed visually on a screen, or conveniently readable from audience members’ phones, tablets, and other personal devices.

MONTEREY, California – March 29, 2017 – This evening Monterey Language Services (www.montereylanguages.com) provided Instant Translation for a Seaside, California meeting with an expected turnout of over 400 attendees.

The issues surrounding sanctuary cities have recently become a source of major concern for many of us in California and the country. In order to give ordinary people the chance to have their opinions on this important topic heard, the City of Seaside – not far from Monterey Language Services’ base in Monterey – organized a public meeting devoted to sanctuary cities – with an expected turnout of hundreds of people.

Monterey Language Services implemented an Instant Translation solution, in which the meeting was presented in English but instantly translated into Spanish with the translation displayed visually on a screen. Audience members were also able to read the translation on their phones, tablets, and other personal devices. Follow the link to see Instant Translation in action: https://youtu.be/dRP5lQHQ0tM

This real-time display of translation proved to be a success and made the important content of the meeting accessible to everyone. “Tonight’s meeting is a testament to the method’s suitability for large audiences. When it comes to providing cross-cultural communication for very large audiences, Instant Translation is a time- and cost-effective solution,” says Mei-Ling Chen, Director of Monterey Language Services.

When the City of Seaside approached Monterey Language Services with a request for a Spanish language option for tonight’s meeting, Monterey Language Services was happy to take on the challenge: “What sets us apart from the competition,” says Mei-Ling Chen at Monterey Language Services, “is finding solutions that meet our clients’ needs. That’s our strength.”

The usual method of simultaneous interpretation with a sufficient number of headsets, transmitters, and receivers to accommodate such a large audience proved too expensive. Instead, Monterey Language Services presented a cost-effective solution that addresses the City’s needs: a method that can service a full house without adding extra hours to the meeting’s duration because of language interpretation needs.

Translation Services Launches 40-hour Minimum Training
Required in the Healthcare Interpreting Industry

MONTEREY, Calif. (11/19, 2014) – Monterey Language Services (MLS) will be hosting an intensive 5 day, 40 hour training course in medical interpreting. The course will take place the week of 1/19-1/23/2015 and is open to all area bilinguals interested in pursuing jobs as medical interpreters.

Monterey Language Services first announced the 40 hour training course at its successful community service workshop last weekend, which let the public get a glimpse into the inner workings of the medical interpretation field—a field that comes with many common misconceptions.

“I was wondering if they (medical interpreters) start out as many of us, interpreting for family and friends, or if they have jobs where the employer saw a need to better train the janitor, for example, so he could fill two roles,” said one participant, “as was the case with my father in 1969.”

“Today, industry standards require medical interpreters to show proof of 40 hour training, successful assessment, and qualification,” said Mei-Ling Chen, Director of Translation at Monterey Language Services, who is also a Monterey Institute of International Studies trained interpreter.

Just because you’re bilingual doesn’t mean you’re qualified to interpret in healthcare. The era of family member “interpreters” is over. “Just being bilingual, it’s not enough. But if you have a certificate from Monterey Language Services, it’s good,” said Victor Sosa, the head of the Language Access at Natividad Medical Center, during his presentation at the workshop.

The Monterey Language Services-hosted program will provide the 40 hour minimum training required in the healthcare interpreting industry to obtain a national certification. Training will be conducted by experienced medical interpreters and trainers. Upon successfully completing the course, participants will receive a certificate of attendance. Those who pass the exit exam will also receive a certificate of competency in medical interpreting from Monterey Language Services. The course will take place 1/19/2015 – 1/23/2015, cost: $800 onsite, $750 online.

MONTEREY, Calif. (Oct. 27, 2014) – Monterey Language Services (MLS) today announced its first “Medical Interpreting as a Profession” seminar, to be held on November 15, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at MLS’s offices at 2600 Garden Road, Suite 130.

The seminar, which is open to all local bilingual residents interested in pursuing jobs as medical interpreters, is intended to usher local bilingual speakers into jobs in healthcare. If participants pass MLS’s exit exam, they will be issued a certificate that is accepted by regional hospitals.

According to the United States Department of Labor Statistics, employment of interpreters and translators is projected to grow 46 percent from 2012 to 2022.

“This means Spanish-speakers, and speakers of other languages such as Chinese and Arabic, can use their language skills to find full-time work,” said Mei-Ling Chen, owner of MLS and a graduate of the Monterey Institute of International Studies. “Certified training is an important step to starting a career in this growing field.”

Since 2010, Monterey Language Services has seen a steady increase in the need for professional medical interpreters, as healthcare organizations have come to prefer interpreters with certification credentials over non-certified candidates. As a leader in the field of medical interpreting locally, this training allows MLS to share its experience and in-depth knowledge with potential service providers.

The cost for the November 15th event is $60 if attending in person and $45 if attending on-line. This is the premiere of the seminar series. Please call 831-655-3460 for more information.

Monterey Language Services provides medical interpretation daily to hospitals in Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties and is the official bilingual evaluator for the County of Monterey. MLS works with the most elite language professionals in the field of translation and interpretation. They connect with thousands of freelancers and utilize their subject expertise in offering medical, technical, and legal interpretation services. Their main services include language proficiency evaluation, training, and certification as well as software website translation & localization.

Marina, Calif. – October 17, 2011 – Monterey Language Services (http://www.montereylanguages.com) today announced that it has served 50 new clients in the last 15 months, as the interpretation and translation company continues rapid growth in a sluggish economy.

Through its contracts, Monterey Language Services, located in the Marina Technology Cluster, Marina’s business incubator, has provided interpretation services to many people in the county who have limited English proficiency.

“Just through our contract with Natividad Medical Center alone, we have served hundreds of patients whose first languages are Spanish, Chinese, Korean or other indigenous languages such as Mixteco, Triqui, Zapoteco, and Chatino,” said CEO Mei-Ling Chen. “We have also been able to assist persons who communicate through American Sign Language.”

Monterey Language Services’ ability to provide interpretation for over 175 languages and dialects is the key to their rapid growth, according to Chen. In one day, the company handled 19 languages through several contracts. The largest number of different languages translated on a single project was 18. The company has access to 2,000 translators world wide and has contracted with nearly 100 so far.

Chen, a graduate of the Monterey Institute of International Studies, attributes the company’s success to the high quality of their translation and interpretation services. In a bad economy, says Chen, what is needed is to be resourceful, dynamic, flexible and efficient. Chen is pro-active in reaching out to researchers, community leaders, and people in indigenous towns around the world to get to know interpreters speaking different kinds of languages.

The clients of Monterey Language Services include embassies who help citizens conduct business in the area, law offices who hold depositions, and corporations such as Hewlett-Packard who want to find the best language interpretation support for their most important foreign customers.
