When machine translation is mentioned, the most common thing to jump to mind is Google Translate. To most people, this is the face of machine translation and any other type of machine translation is just the same as Google Translate, but inferior or superior in some shape or form. However, there are actually four different types of machine translation that exist. Each have their own advantages and disadvantages that will entice people to either use or not use them.

First, there is Statistical Machine Translation, or SMT. The best example of statistical translation is Google Translate. SMTs such as Google Translate use statistical models that draw on a large amount of bilingual text that is provided to them. Through this, they try to find statistical matches for how many times something has been translated as something. For example, if the word “apple” has been translated as “manzana” in Spanish enough times, then that becomes the SMT’s pick for the word apple. It does this for every word in the source and target language before it finally outputs a translation. SMTs can be useful for translating basic words and phrases. However, for more complex sentences, SMTs are not a good pick because they do not factor in context. This means that you can end up with some very strange sentences that do not properly reflect what is being said in the source sentence.

Next, there is the Rule-Based Machine Translation, or RBMT. As the name implies, with RBMT, the machine is translating based on the rules of grammar that it is given. It goes over the source language to analyze its grammar and then looks through the target language to see what kind of grammar rules need to be followed when translating the sentence. After it is done, it translates the sentence according to the rules that it looked up. While this might sound as if there might be fewer problems than SMTs, RBMT translations still need a great deal of proofreading to ensure that there are no problems with the text.

Third, there is the Hybrid Machine Translation, or HMT. The HMT takes elements of RBMTs and SMTs and then uses a translation memory. The addition of a translation memory makes the overall quality of the translation higher than that of SMTs and RBMTs, but there are still problems with using a HMT. For one, it still needs extensive editing, meaning that human translators will be needed to review all the translations.

The fourth, and final type of translation is Neural Machine Translation, or NMT. This type of machine translation uses neural network models that are based on the human brain to make statistical models for translation. When they work, NMTs can provide some of the most accurate translations that would need little to no editing potentially. One of NMT examples is DeepL.

Overall machine translation can be used as a tool to expedite translation, but whether it can produce clear and accurate translation for high level discussions, complex concepts, nuances and context that is still in question and requires time to advance it. This once again proves that the value of professional human translators is not replaceable just yet!

During the translation process there are a lot of moving parts that are necessary to ensure that a quality translation is produced. One of the main ones is, of course, the translator. Without a translator, there would be no translation to work with. However, the process does not stop there. There are various quality checks that need to occur to make sure that the deliverable is a representation of the best possible quality that can be produced.

To do this, reviewers are used. Reviewers can come in all shapes and sizes depending on the type of project or its size, but typically there is at least one reviewer involved in the translation process. Sending out a translation with a review is a sure way to ensure that the deliverables are in good order and shape. A reviewer is equally if not more important than a translator because they act as the final defense line against quality errors and even more importantly, they increase quality in discourse and presentation. There are reactive and proactive approaches to a translation process.

A reactive approach simply means that when the reviewer finds an error, they will correct it and submit it. Then the vendor (a translation company) might send it back to the translator to make sure that what the reviewer corrected was not a problem. Then if the translator finds an error in the review, they will correct it, which will prompt the vendor to send it back to the reviewer. This process could potentially go on for a long time if there are no measures in place for a more proactive approach.

This is why a more proactive approach is encouraged where there are set processes in place. Expectations are laid out beforehand, and everyone involved receives metrics to help translation and reviewing become more efficient. It also will help to eliminate any potential back and forth that might occur between different people involved. Of course though, the training involved is necessary to make sure that everyone is caught up and on the same page regarding their expectations. A proactive approach in a translation process keeps projects in control. It’s especially valuable for large projects that involved many resources. A proactive process saves costs and headaches down the road.

Finally, client reviews, if those occurred, are looped back to the reactive and proactive approaches mentioned above. Usually a successful project is the end result of dedications from both the client side and the translation company side. Working closely together with the client is the most enjoyable part for us and that guarantees quality translations every time!

Our goal is this: Our customers will not need to have it reviewed and sent back to be corrected even once.

To assure this, we have developed a rigorous management process, starting with choosing the best translators from our translator database. We always select translators with the subject matter knowledge and experience necessary for the project at hand, using translators who specialize in marketing for marketing translations, medical translators for medical translations, legal translators for legal translations, and technical translators for technical translations.

Using translators unsuited to the subject matter leads to mistakes, and it is the most common problem in translation projects. That is why selecting the right translators is a fundamentally important step in our process.

We don’t rely on just a handful of translators. We have a huge database and network of linguists, many of them accredited and certified, and we are continually expanding it, always looking for the best translation professionals in their fields. We start by screening our translators and testing them to make sure they are able to perform to our standards. We also build and maintain a professional working relationship with them, to make sure they understand our standards and our clients’ needs.

Even after the translation is complete, we further review our translators’ work to make sure they meet our quality requirements. We find, isolate, verify and resolve any issues. With the multi-stage quality assurance process, which uses at least two linguists for every translation, followed by an extra round of QA and Verification, we ensure that no mistakes slip past us into the final product.

Doing the job right the first time is utterly important. It saves time and avoids extra cost. Best yet, it helps our clients increase communication success and business growth. This is our mission every day and we are loving it!

Monterey Language Services strives to provide the highest quality of translation and interpretation services.
You have found us – we provide quick & easy solutions for all your translation needs. Tell us about the subject of the text to be translated, its size and the languages you want, and we will provide a quote. Send us the files, and within short order, we will deliver a clear, accurate, complete translation.

That’s it! That’s all you have to do. Simply send us the text you want translated, then leave all the rest to us.

Of course, quite a bit more goes on behind the scenes, starting with doing the translation right the first time. We use a multi-step process to ensure the quality of our translations, starting with the translation itself, then editing, followed by proofreading and QA. Every translation is confirmed by at least one other linguist to assure that the meaning of the original is conveyed clearly and accurately.

We also check for completeness and formatting and can perform DTP image editing as necessary. We work with any format, from Word documents, to PowerPoint presentations, to Excel spreadsheets, to software applications, to website localization. Whether you’re looking to translate a code of conduct, an employee handbook, company policies, a slideshow, a survey or a script, we can make it happen.

Can this picture become a reality for the translation and interpretation industry?

As interpreters, we are always interested in the development of interpretation technology, including the possibility of “robot” interpreters. About a year ago, we wrote about the potential of interpretation software and Microsoft’s efforts in that area. Their software is meant to analyze your speech, translate it and synthesize an audio track of your own voice speaking in the target language. (However, the software will first need to study your voice for several hours. Also, it gets around one in eight words wrong.)

So are there robot interpreters in our future? The answer is complicated. Perhaps one day, but not any time soon.

Interpretation software faces many difficulties, in each of its component stages. The first step is speech recognition, an area that has seen great improvement over the last few years. Nowadays, speech recognition figures in our daily lives – when we make a call and are asked to speak to a robot, when we are driving and asked to give commands to the stereo system, etc. Due to its wide range of applications, speech recognition is the most mature of the technologies involved, but even it still has a long way to go before it becomes truly reliable, as we are well aware from our experiences.

Next, the words spoken (and hopefully understood correctly by the system) need to be translated. While machine translation has certainly come a long way, anyone who has tried to use Google or Bing Translate on a foreign language website can testify that what comes out is not always even legible, much less an accurate translation of the source text.

Finally, the software needs to generate a spoken version of its translation through text to speech synthesis. This is possible with today’s technology, but even there many irregularities remain. Intonation, emphasis and other vocal indicators still do not carry over particularly well into artificial voice generators, creating voices that sound, well, robotic.

Beyond these basic limitations of the software, there also remain concerns about the nuances of both translation and interpretation. Questions about homonyms, about words that have multiple meanings depending on context, and of course the issue of cultural differences. There are many situations where even the most sophisticated software will be unable to guess the subtle nuances a speaker intends. A human interpreter does not just translate the words, but also the subtext and hidden meanings within them, judging not only the speaker, but also the audience.

“Reading the audience” to judge their understanding and reception of the translation is a vital skill for an interpreter. It is also one that becomes even more important in smaller, more intimate settings outside of presentations and conference interpretation. In a business meeting, at a doctor’s appointment, even in court, the message needs to be tailored based on the reactions of the listener.

Can you image a robot, as they as now, doing medical interpretation or legal interpretation?

What is the link between language and mental well-being? TIME magazine offered an opinion. According to a study conducted by psychologist Ellen Bialystok at York University in Toronto, people who were bilingual for most of their lives could avoid symptoms of Alzheimer’s for four to six years longer than people who are monolingual. The study included 450 Alzheimer’s patients. In addition, the ability to use multiple languages allows people to expand their horizons as they are able to understand more books, movies, and music.

While there are many advantages of being multilingual, the training of a translator and interpreter is a lot more different. Translation often requires years of experience across different categories of texts, whereas interpreters need to possess vital techniques such as note-taking and public speaking skills. Scientists pointed out that the reason behind the unlikelihood of bilingual or multilingual people to develop Alzheimer’s is called cognitive reserve. Utilizing and switching back and forth from different languages keep the brain working, hence reducing the possibility of Alzheimer’s. As a result, it may be safe to infer that language professionals may have a lower chance of mental deterioration.

Language learning and skills can indeed help improve the quality of life in terms of either entertainment or mental health. However, in translation and interpretation industry, language skills, along with experience and techniques, can also ensure services with the highest quality. In fact, for professional translators and interpreters, language skills and background knowledge are lifetime endeavors. Language professionals with years and years of experience are more likely to give outstanding performance. The truth is that modern life would be dull without these language professionals, who bridge all aspects of life with their language skills.

I recently received a translation assignment, which consisted of only one sentence. The assignment came from a Chinese restaurant owner, who gave me a picture with the sentence in it. Many customers, including English and Spanish speakers, always asked her about the meaning of that sentence. My first reaction was, “This should be a piece of cake!” However, the assignment turned out to be a fulfilling learning experience.Because I followed the Chinese sentence structure very closely, my initial translation was a little confusing to some native English speakers. This raised a very interesting question: can Chinese be translated word for word? The answer seemed to be negative, as Chinese and English have very different syntaxes. One sensible approach is to understand the meaning first. However, even with the understanding of the Chinese text, searching for the perfect English equivalent will require time and patience. And then it all became clear to me. Only through meticulous analysis and review, a quality translation can be produced. Quality lies in every single word that I chose to use — even if it means going over the minutest details. It was an assignment with only one sentence, but it gave me a priceless lesson on the value of quality. ~ By Ringo Li

Recently, researchers from Microsoft Corporation gave a presentation in China, showcasing the company’s latest language software, which was able to turn an English speech into Chinese—in the speaker’s own voice.

Will this software eventually replace human translators and interpreters? We think not. And here are our thoughts:

The technique behind this revolutionary translation and interpretation software is called “Deep Neural Networks,” which mimics human brain behavior. It is, however, important to note that this breakthrough took place about only two years ago. On the other hand, the first translator, Saint Jerome, has translated the Bible into Latin in the 4th century. Human translators, as a result, have been around for thousands of years. This long historical foundation is unlikely to be replaced by machines.

As amazing and groundbreaking this technology may seem, errors still exists and much more improvement is required. The software is far from perfect. Researchers pointed out that the 1 in 7 or 8 words would be incorrect. It is not error-free. However, human interpreters are able to handle error right on the spot, hence more efficient.

Technology is a double-edged sword. While science can definitely increase our quality of life, it cannot fully replace human language specialists. Only human translators can identify the subtleties in languages. Only human interpreters can detect errors. Only human linguists are able to master the art of interpretation.

Facebook friends can now translate posts in different languages to their default language.

In this era of social media and instant communication, translation has stepped up to meet the needs for the Facebook generation. Most people have some friends on Facebook who speaks more than one language; personally I see posts in Spanish, Italian, French, and Croatian.

Recently, I have noticed a new feature underneath these posts in languages other than English that says “See Translation.” This is a button to click that will automatically translate the above text to English, or whatever default language you may have. I tried this out with a post in Spanish and the results were subpar. Instead of translating the text as a complete sentence, this feature translated every word individually, which can change the understanding of the post.

If I knew someone was translating my Facebook posts from English into a language of their choice, I think it could be unfortunate for them to take the post out of context because of poor translation. This could cause for a strain on a relationship with someone who is a Facebook friend, but may speak a different language.

The benefits are for those trying to learn and practice their vocabulary with a new language. It can be beneficial to follow a celebrity who posts in Spanish with proper vocabulary and translate their posts into English. Another way it can be positive is that these words that were once unknown can at least be given a general idea of what the post is about. Pau Gasol is one person who writes his posts in English followed by the same post in Spanish in order to avoid confusion.
