As the COVID-19 virus spreads, many states in the U.S. and countries across the world are issuing orders to stay at home for all nonessential personnel. This means that most language professionals must figure out ways to successfully complete their work remotely.

Interestingly, this specific order might not affect translators all that much. Most translators already complete most of their work remotely. Translation does not need to be done in person, so many translators live in their home country, or in a country whose language they translate into.

Interpreters are significantly and directly impacted by the COVID-19 virus and stay-at-home orders. While there are remote interpretation services (such as phone and video interpretation), a majority of interpreters still complete most of their work in person. This is no longer possible for most interpretation jobs. In order to support interpreters, LSPs and the interpreters themselves should work with clients to set up remote services, including video and phone interpretation. There are many online platforms available, which our interpreters are familiar with. They are ready to offer services using these platforms, so that they can still provide necessary interpretations in a safe way.

Of course, this stay-at-home order doesn’t just affect linguists. It affects everyone who works in the companies that provide language services: project managers, vendor managers, localization engineers, sales teams, etc. At Monterey Language Services, we have many years of experience in working from home. While some of our operations do take place in our physical Monterey office, we also have several employees who already work remotely full time.

Working from home presents a major lifestyle change for many people. It does require people to learn how to balance life and work and how to maintain their energy and strive to reach their goals at work. In our experience, when employees are working remotely, it is not important to track employees’ actions and tasks every minute of the day; micromanaging is not an effective strategy. Rather, it is about everyone having a common goal and working toward that common goal comfortably yet effectively. It’s about managing tasks rather than managing people.

Working effectively from home requires various technological resources. We optimize our technology to help us successfully work from home; we use our virtual private network (VPN) to share and access files, we keep open channels of communication via apps on our work phones, and more. We are working hard to remain available to our clients who need our services, and to provide as much support as we can to the translators and interpreters that we work with.

During times like these, staying connected is more important than ever. We need to support language professionals and continue providing translation and interpretation services, so that people can stay informed and connected throughout the world, even if this connection is remote!

We often ask ourselves, “What does the translation and interpretation company of the future look like?” When we think intentionally about the future, we are better able to predict trends and plan for them, or at least identify them early on. We are also able to foresee potential problems and develop plans for addressing these issues before they significantly impact our work. For example, California recently passed a new law (called California Assembly Bill 5) that changed the legal requirements for classifying people as “freelancers” versus “employees.” We knew that this law would go into effect on January 1, 2020, so we did our research beforehand on how to legally continue our working relationships. We prepared ourselves, and when the law went into effect it did not significantly disrupt our work.

Of course, when we are working with such new technology and subject matter, we will encounter things that we have never seen before. How do we handle the challenge of facing new things? We simply have to dive in headfirst to gather all of the information that we can, using our network of trusted resources as well as our own ability to practice and test different technologies or methods out. We keep open communication with all of our stakeholders: you never know where the next tip or trend is going to come from.

We also are always working to expand our network of linguists across the globe, both to make sure that we can cover any request relevant to new trends, and to open new channels of information exchange. Of course, one great way to keep abreast of new trends is always to research and never be afraid to address challenges. Another way is by getting the perspective of younger people who might have new, unconventional ideas, which is why we always keep in touch with the new generation of translation, interpretation, and localization students.

Modern translation and interpretation providers operate very differently than those of the past, and we can assume that they will continue to evolve and change. To stay current or even ahead of the curve, we must work hard to remain updated with today’s trends, which means we are always thinking ahead, learning, and growing. We focus on the future and accomplish things today that will set us up for success tomorrow. We rely on our hard-working staff, our network of various relationships, our technologies, and our information-gathering strategies to keep us energized and to help us stay a dynamic translation and interpretation company! Every day is interesting for us at work because no two days are the same at Monterey Language Services!

One of the best parts of working in a translation company is when we have an opportunity to tangibly help someone out. We recently had clients who had accidents in other countries resulting in severe injuries. All of these medical documents were in Portuguese and Japanese, and they needed to be translated so that they could be sent to their insurance companies.

Medical records often come in hard copy. When we make a quote, we count the total amount of words and base the quote on this number. Hard copy makes counting the words more complicated, so we must do our best to accurately count and calculate by hand; we might even do this process two or three times to ensure that our quote will be as accurate as possible.

These projects had several different types and lengths of documents, including handwritten doctor’s notes, medical histories, diagnosis information, receipts, itemized bills, and information sheets. We bundled these by type and had them translated in different batches, to make sure the translator wasn’t overburdened and could focus on one type at a time based on their specialization. This helped us produce high quality translations and stay organized.

This also helped us notice patterns in the documents, and come up with ideas that would make translation easier and quicker. For example, several of the documents were nearly identical, with just a few words or sentences being different. Rather than having the same content translated multiple times, we translated one of the documents. Then for all the others, we identified every piece that was different, translated these “strings,” and inserted them where they belonged. This saved our client a bunch and also helped us stick closer to the budget.

The volume of medical records is usually heavy especially for severe injuries. It requires a team to complete managing and translating all sorts of documents, and the tasks involved include selecting translators who have relevant experience and qualifications, organizing all of our files, keeping track of the status of the project, clarifying unclear parts with experts, reviewing the translations for completeness and accuracy, and preparing the files for final delivery to the client.

We work to have a supportive environment where our team members can cover for each other’s backs, so no one is overloaded. When improvements are needed, we are willing to talk about them and improve them rather than brush them under the rug. After all, accuracy and completeness are the utmost goal of our work. We enjoy medical records translation projects, because it gives us a great sense of helping our clients and also because there is always something challenging us to put in the extra effort!

A day at our work as a translation and interpretation company can be compared to creating a piece of music. We often manage our work in a way that cultivates a rhythm and flow that feels like a melody.

Creating a good flow or melody every day at work can really enhance our work experience and help us remain motivated. We’ve all worked on projects where we were “in the groove.” It feels great, almost like the stars aligned to make that project perfect. Imagine if all of your projects were like that!

A good flow means that you have a sense of moving forward and making progress. Being able to understand the essence of your task and differentiate what is the key to complete the task is essential. For example, when scheduling interpreters, we make sure that the information on the date, time, and location for each assignment is precisely passed to the interpreter assigned. More importantly, when assigning an interpreter, we make sure to match subject expertise, qualifications, and whether it is for simultaneous interpretation or consecutive interpretation.

Paying attention to little things is a necessary part of maintaining an unbroken flow at work. For example, if you need to scan many documents for a translation project, be sure to check that you’ve scanned everything you need to. Adding this check as part of your natural workflow will greatly reduce the possibility of making a mistake, and lead to successful completion of translation under a deadline.

Be sure to keep our mind clear and with intention when we work, so that we can do everything right the first time. Mistakes and errors can usually be fixed, but the time spent on fixing them will cause the flow to be broken and the melody interrupted.

Every day at work will be a different rhythm. Some days, there will be urgent projects that need to be addressed immediately. For instance, perhaps there will be late-minute additions to projects you’ve been working on. Be sure to conclude it on the same day, so to keep up a productive flow. Putting things off surely decreases work momentum or makes you feel like doing the same thing over and over. So let’s avoid that.

Responding quickly to clients and bringing them along with you in your flow can really create a good rapport and that can help you feeling great! Also ask yourself: how you deal with issues, how you approach problems, how you contribute to work environment, how you move things forward and support your co-workers, or how you manage balance and variety at work. These answers and activities compose your music every day! Every day should a great time at work!

Translators and interpreters are synonyms in some ways: both need to have a good command of at least two languages in order to do their job. Both decode what’s in the source language and then encode it in the target language. Both are cross-cultural communicators, whose final goal is to tear down language barriers and facilitate communication.

However, by industry standards, they also have their own distinct professional traits. What do interpreters do that translators don’t? What does a translator need that an interpreter can do without? How different are they really on the job? Here are just a few of the things that set translators and interpreters apart from each other.

1. Work Mode
Professional translators and interpreters sometimes forget that many people outside of the industry often don’t even realize that these are two different professions. To put it as simply as possible, translators write while interpreters speak. A translator takes a text in one language and rewrites it in another language. Interpreters, on the other hand, listen to what someone says in one language and then convey it by speaking in another language.

The fundamental difference in their respective lines of work is this: a translator usually does not speak at a job, but must have excellent writing skills, with all the things this implies: perfect punctuation, spelling, grammar. A successful interpreter needs all the skills required of a good public speaker, delivering messages clearly by speaking.

Translators in general enjoy the luxury of having more time, but that also means they have to be skilled at personal time management and able to focus deeply on one thing for an extended period, whereas interpreters must be quicker on their feet, able to tune out distractions, and have strong multi-tasking skills.

2. Working Environment
Translators and interpreters have different tools in their arsenals, and work in different environments.

A modern translator is computer savvy and skilled with the leading translation software (MemoQ, Trados, Wordfast, Déjà Vu, etc). Translators often have more freedom in terms of where they can do their work, and since translation requires a great deal of focus and time, this means a comfortable space free from distraction, whether it be a home office or a space at the agency or company a translator works for.

Interpreters, by contrast, have much less personalized work areas, since they generally work in spaces that are not their own, although there are interpreters who work over the phone or through video calls from home. Interpreters in many cases also don’t own the equipment they work with: simultaneous interpretation requires microphones, audio transmission equipment, receivers, and headphones, but these are generally provided by the translation company or the client. Interpreters working in the consecutive mode have a more modest toolbox which usually includes just a pen and a notebook. Recently, tablets and digital pens with special features have been making their way into consecutive interpreters’ kits, but are not yet widespread.

3. Dealing With Pressure
Interpreters work under great pressure because what’s being said needs to be interpreted immediately, which doesn’t leave much time to think. For interpreters, time is very precious. If they spend too much time on a certain sentence or word, they run the risk of missing important information that follows.

By comparison, translators are not under immediate pressure but incremental pressure. They spend a long time refining their work and even invite others to edit and proofread it in order to ensure that the final product is as flawless as possible.

Let’s say your company has a great product or service and wants to start selling it to new markets. You learn that customers are more likely to buy your product if you make the information available in their native languages.

While calling a translation company and requesting a quote might seem to be the next logical step, it is useful to consider the benefits of transcreation when it comes to creative content, such as marketing materials.

First, let’s look at what transcreation is.

Although the term entered the professional jargon of marketing and language experts some time ago, its precise definition remains evasive.

In fact, a myriad of other terms are often used interchangeably depending on the context, such as “cultural adaptation,” “marketing translation,” “internationalization,” “multilingual copywriting,” or “free-style translation.”

According to Wikipedia, transcreation is the process of adapting a message from one language to another, while maintaining its style, tone, context, and, most importantly, intent.

In the simplest terms, transcreation means creative translation. It involves taking the message, stripping down the words, and recreating its essence often using different words while preserving the creative and emotional intent of the original.

You might ask how transcreation differs from traditional translation.

The key difference is the desired outcome.

A professional translator strives to be accurate and faithful to the original, as well as stylistically and grammatically correct. This is the gold standard for translation.

Yet, when it comes to advertising content, even the best translation might not elicit the intended reaction in your new audience because of cultural differences.

Below are some examples of why transcreation matters.

The Scandinavian vacuum maker Electrolux launched its U.S. marketing campaign with the tagline translated into English as “Nothing sucks like an Electrolux.” The Swedish company belatedly realized that, instead of highlighting the vacuum’s high power, the tagline turned off shoppers and damaged its brand in the U.S.

The German sportswear retailer Puma had to promptly withdraw a limited line of shoes produced in the colors of the United Arab Emirates’ flag after receiving negative feedback from Emiratis who believed the product trivialized their flag. The negative reaction was intensified by the fact that, in many Arab cultures, the shoe is considered dirty as it touches both the ground and the foot.

When Intel decided to bring its successful “Intel: Sponsors of Tomorrow” campaign to Brazilian markets, it had to change the message in Portuguese to “Intel: In love with the future.” This was done after research showed that “Sponsors of Tomorrow”, rendered in Portuguese, implied that Intel did not fulfill its promises promptly.(Samples were summarized from the sources: Wikipedia and Business News Daily.)

Transcreation helps avoid some of the pitfalls related to word usage, cultural context, and global vs. local marketing that come up in the process of cross-cultural advertising.

A professional transcreation expert is creative, culturally sensitive, and marketing-aware. He cares about preserving the “feel” of the original content and strives to evoke the same sensations using culturally appropriate linguistic means.

Therefore, when contacting a translation company about translating your marketing content, we hope you inquire about transcreation. It may prove a worthwhile investment as it helps to make your product more competitive internationally and allows you to reach your sales goals more quickly.

But translating a CMS-based site requires a special approach. The content of modern dynamic websites is not stored in a single file, and it cannot be simply downloaded and sent over to a translator. Thus, an entire localization engineering process is required to first extract the source text, then reintegrate it back in after the translation is complete.

Plug-ins do exist within some CMS platforms to assist with this process. They allow pages to be linked together as multilingual equivalents. However, full integration requires extensive engineering work. While most translation companies do not have this capability, Monterey Language Services does. Monterey Language Services’ localization technology and global localization platform streamline the integration process to ensure that our translation is properly applied within your site.

Furthermore, we can translate not only the surface content, but also the meta data of your site. That will ensure your site’s SEO (search engine optimization) functions in all of its intended languages, serving to attract new visitors and help your site succeed in international markets. That’s right – We translate and localize your SEO content so that your website will rank high in other countries and markets!

We can also monitor the updates you make to your site and update our translations to match, so that all of your customers are presented with the most current information.

With our skilled and experienced team, we guarantee the successful translation and implementation of your website, no matter the content or language, with no extra hassle or effort on your end. Just leave everything to us.

For translation and interpretation projects, why do customers prefer to hire a translation company like Monterey Language Services instead of an individual translator or interpreter?

The short answer is a company like ours has a system and resources in place to guarantee quality and availability. In other words, we provide professional translation and interpretation services.

We make sure all our customers are confident that their projects are being handled by experts and their requests will be met with the highest possible quality. We are our customers’ external team, helping them move forward to the growth of their core business.

Whether it is a request for a Chinese interpreter for two hour or a couple of Spanish interpreters and Portuguese interpreters for two days; a one-page press release to be translated in eighteen languages, or a thirty page manual to be translated into Spanish, French, German, and Japanese, we take care of them all. That is our everyday life.

First, we recruit highly skilled translators and interpreters every single day – find the best translators and interpreters with the right language pair and expert background knowledge, and test them. Then, we train them according to the customer’s guidelines. We coordinate them and brief them with all the necessary information, so they become a part of the company we serve.

We also decide on how many linguists to deploy to assure quality in every aspect and provide backup translators and interpreters if one becomes unavailable. We provide all languages assistance in order to meet our customers’ needs for comprehensive and full line services. Once a customer finds Monterey Language Services, they don’t need to go anywhere else. We tailor solutions to our customers’ specific needs.

Last but not least, often times, a translation project, a conference interpretation event, or a voiceover/subtitling project requires a team effort. Projects are usually supported by a group of professionals rather than a single-handed individual effort. It could involve so many aspects that only an experienced and professional company like Monterey Language Services can excel in it.

Monterey Language Services strives to provide the highest quality of translation and interpretation services.

Part of what has caused English to evolve so much is its spread around the world. The language’s diversity is shown by the existence of colloquial phrases such as the Jamaican “I and I” (meaning “we”), and “fixin’ to” (implying “planning to” or “about to”) in the southeastern United States. In fact, certain letters and words have ended up with different pronunciations. An example is the word “advertisement”: in England, the stress goes on the second syllable, but in the United States, it goes on the third syllable. Also, when a word in English ends in an R sound, the R sound is replaced with a mid-central vowel sound (represented by the symbol ə) in much of the eastern United States, as well as in England and several former British colonies.

Some of the neologisms in English are based on people’s names. Gerrymander comes from the name of a Massachusetts governor who redrew the state’s districts to favor his party in 1812, while the Diesel engine is named after its inventor. More often, the doctrines and policies of particular statesmen lend their names to words ending in –ism, like Leninism and Thatcherism.

Sometimes, certain words in English can take on new meanings, whether alone or in combinations. This occurs often in popular culture, as shown by the music genres blues, folk and rock ‘n’ roll, along with the movie genres comedy and horror.

Clearly, this tongue that arose in the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of England is now one of the ultimate mixtures in the world, and simply continues to evolve. In fact, many languages have entities that regulate them, such as the Bangla Academy, which regulates Bengali; English has no official regulation. In a way, English is no longer a sufficient name for the language. It nowadays needs a name that emphasizes its fascinating mélange of words from around the world.
