We love community events. We enjoy interpreting at community events because it gives us a great sense of belonging, serving, and giving back to the community we live in.

Community events foster a sense of togetherness and responsibility, spurring community members to keep the community safe, inclusive, and welcoming. This is especially important when the community is made up of people from all walks of life, from younger to older, different genders, different cultures, and across languages.

California especially is home to people from many different countries and backgrounds, including first- and second-generation immigrants, and others whose preferred language isn’t English. Diverse backgrounds bring fresh perspectives to community events and planning, which is why we were so excited to provide interpretation services to the recent Hilby Avenue Traffic Calming Project on May 17th.

The interpreter we provided has a great many years of experience, even in other traffic-related projects. We prepared our interpretation equipment, made up of portable receivers and headsets that have an incredible range of use. Our client let us know that the portable equipment was a “great approach” for their walking tour around Hilby Avenue, and was quite happy with our mobility and flexibility in helping.

The event was a great success. We helped to welcome incoming community members, letting them know that interpretation services were available. The headsets allowed for the Spanish participants to understand the presentation, Q&A, and breakout session in order to provide feedback. Our interpreter assisted the Spanish speaking participants to write their comments in English on the provided maps of Hilby Avenue, as well as interpreted for the event employees so they could directly communicate with the Spanish participants and ask for their ideas.

This type of community safety event is very important, and therefore, we worked as community members as well to help generate more feedback from participants who were able to offer different perspectives. We look forward to future continuous endeavors with the traffic safety project.

An interpreter must be prepared for all kinds of interpretation assignments. One of the types is Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings.

The biggest difference between interpretation for IEP meetings versus other types of interpretation is that you have to be understanding of the student, teacher, and parent. You must understand their situation because no child is the same. This will lead to a more engaging meeting as well as a more successful interpretation event.

IEP meetings are very important for students, parents, and teachers in the United States, so being able to conduct one without issue is a very valuable skill that interpreters should do their best to work at. Some skills that you’ve learned from other interpretation work might be applicable to IEP interpretation, yet it’s important that interpreters learn the other aspects of IEP interpretation to ensure that the meeting goes without a hitch.

Familiarize yourself with the IEP process. It’s important for the interpreter to understand what the IEP process entails, including the purpose of the meeting, the roles of each participant, and the importance of confidentiality.

The interpreter should also be sure to gather information about the student, such as the student’s academic and behavioral history, previous IEPs, and any assessments or evaluations. You should also review the current IEP draft and any supporting documentation. If you are working with an LSP (Language Service Provider), you should ask them to provide this information for you.

A successful interpreter should learn about the student’s strengths, weaknesses, and needs to be able to effectively interpret the discussion about the student’s goals and accommodations.

An IEP interpreter should be familiar with the relevant vocabulary and terminology used in special education and ensure they understand the acronyms and terms used in the meeting. If there is anything you don’t understand, try to look more into it and maybe even jot them down as notes to take with you to the meeting.

As the interpreter, you should be mindful of your role as a neutral interpreter and should adhere to the professional standards and ethical considerations. Be sure that you do not provide any advice, opinions or contribute to the content of the meeting.

Continuing from our last blog, we will be highlighting some more ASL interpretation examples that Monterey Language Services has experience in.

Standardized Testing

ASL interpreters are often present in the classroom as educational interpreters. Similarly, interpretation is needed for providing instructions for standardized testing, such as the SATs in American schools. Sometimes the same educational interpreters can be called upon to interpret for standardized testing in their respective schools, but this might not be a certainty. The test may take place on a weekend and require a different interpreter to fill in, for example.

Standardized tests also don’t necessarily take place in a K-12 environment. For example, these tests might be taken to certify a job requirement or receive a passing grade to enter a special program.

American Sign Language and Foreign Sign Language

When we were asked to provide an interpreter for a patient who required Mexican Sign Language (LSM), we were able to send a Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) who was familiar with both ASL and LSM. CDIs themselves are Deaf or hard-of-hearing and are native in sign language and Deaf culture.

The CDI assigned to this task was exceptional at interpreting between ASL and LSM. However, due to the fact that the CDI could not vocalize the client’s needs to the hospital staff, a second interpreter — this one for ASL — was brought in to interpret between the CDI and the staff. Thus, the communication flow looked like this:

Patient > CDI > ASL Interpreter > Hospital Staff, and vice versa.

The interpretation was successful in large part thanks to the hospital interpreter manager who was able to inform us ahead of time that they would require LSM, which gave us the time to comb through our large network of interpreters and send a right fit. The ability to identify a proper language is a very important prerequisite for a successful and smooth interpretation encounter. The hospital was our county’s public hospital Natividad Medical Center. Their excellent caregiving to the patient and hospitality to our interpreters were highly commendable. We appreciate all the hard work involved on all sides and are honored to share such an excellent work between foreign sign language and American sign language interpretation.

For an interpreter working remotely through this pandemic, you more than likely have used Zoom to provide your services. Like Google Meet, Zoom is one of the most used video conferencing tools. It is easy to use and comes with many features that make video conferencing more convenient. One of these features is its interpretation feature. This post will help you learn more about this feature and how to best use it.

First, the host should not be using a free account. The free account comes with many features, but it does not come with the interpretation feature enabled. The easiest way to do this is to upgrade to a business account. Along with a variety of features, the interpretation function is enabled on student and business accounts. Also, be sure to have Zoom updated to its latest version. The interpretation function did not come to the program until later versions, so older versions will not be able to use it. There are many clients who do not realize this and are confused as to why they cannot use interpretation despite perfectly following the instructions.

The next step is to make sure that the interpretation function is enabled. To do this, the host will need to go into the web portal for Zoom and sign into their account. From there, they will need to go into Settings and then go to In Meeting (Advanced). If there is no option for this, you will need to contact Zoom support to have it enabled. After you go into In Meeting (Advanced), all you need to do is scroll down to Language Interpretation and add the languages you need. Just note that you can add as many languages you want to the list of languages, but in a meeting, you can only set up a maximum of five at once.

After enabling the interpreter function and adding the desired languages, it is time to add the interpreters. While still in the web portal, navigate to Schedule a Meeting, and after setting up the meeting as you like, then scroll down to Interpretation and check the box for Enable Language Interpretation. In that same section, there should be a box where you can add an interpreter by their email address, and you can add what language they will be speaking. When you do this, be sure that the interpreter is using a Zoom account that is linked to the email that you put in. If they use a different account, then be sure to ask them for that email address so that you can add them.

Finally, you can launch the meeting. After the meeting is launched, have the interpreter(s) join, and then in the meeting controls, you should see Interpretation. Click on that and you will be able to add and remove interpreters as necessary. If the interpreters are not appearing, make sure that they are properly added, on the right account, and that you have the latest version of Zoom. If you follow all these instructions, then you will be on the way to a successful Zoom interpretation session!
