This is both a blessing and a curse. Though you may be able to connect with someone who needs your services, you may also attract someone who is just trying to scam you into giving them access to your personal information so that they can make some easy money. Fortunately, there are ways to try and stop scams before they get too far, and make sure that you are able to continue working without having to worry about whether or not a potential client is just someone looking to scam you. In the beginning, they might appear to just be normal customers, but if something sounds suspicious to you during your communication with them, then you should stop communication and then they will stop as well.

First, some of the most recognizable scams are those that list illogical arguments or deals that are too good to be true. Either way, you should always be cautious of any suspicious links or files that are sent to you. If you are suspicious of something, do not open it. This is easier sometimes in the more recognizable scams. For example, if someone contacts you with an offer for translation services, but they need your bank account number so that they can directly deposit the payment, and they send you a link so that you can do so, then that should already be sounding off alarm bells in your head. If anyone asks for personal information, then you should begin to be weary of them. You should either just not respond at all or say that you are not available for their assignment, and move on.

If something sound too good to be true, you should also be cautious of whether or not it is a scam. While a juicy offer of maybe $.50 per word might make you reluctant to turn you down, if they start showing signs of asking for any kind of personal information that they don’t need to, then you should turn them down immediately and cease all contact.

Next, some scams are a little harder to detect because they seem like they are real people trying to actually enlist your services. They might have a real document for you to translate, a backstory where they say they need it for a specific event, and even give you their full name, company name, and phone number. Up to this point, everything seems normal and there is no reason to have any suspicion. However, remember that scammers are always after ways to get money. So when the conversation changes to payment, this is where you should start to look extra carefully at what they are saying. There are scammers who will agree to your price and then send a check to your address for maybe double what they said. They will say that it is a “mistake” and ask that you transfer the money to their account because they need the money for some kind of personal, family emergency. This is where you should step back, tell them that you are no longer able to work with them, and then block their email address.

There are also resources that you can access if you feel that you need more education or assistance with dealing with scams. You can also report fraudulent businesses and/or activity to www.fraud.org. That information will be transmitted to the appropriate law enforcement agencies.

There are a lot of ways for scammers to try and get you to give them what they want, but the important thing is always to just cease all communication as soon as possible. Scams are possible to be avoided, and through our collective cooperation, we will be able to give each other the tools and knowledge to prevent us from having to go through the horrible ordeal of being scammed. Hopefully this post helps you to avoid scams in the future.

Staying connected with other people is another great way to cultivate positivity. Since we are all required (except for essential workers) to stay at home, most of us are interacting with very few people face-to-face. That makes it all the more important to keep connected to friends and family, which can bring a great injection of positivity. At Monterey Language Services, we apply this at work as well: making sure to continue working together and communicating normally, but also checking in on each other and making sure that everyone on our team is doing okay.

It’s also important to find the positivity in the simple things: take stock of your situation and actively look for the things that bring you happiness, no matter how small. Most of us don’t enjoy being quarantined at home, but we can appreciate that we have a home. We can find the positivity in the fact that by staying home, we are limiting the spread of the virus.

Finally, let’s not forget to bring positivity to those who need it. Many people are hurting or in need, and  this Washington Post article has a great list of charities that are providing critical services during this pandemic that anyone can donate to or volunteer for if they are able.

It can feel difficult to stay positive during an experience like the one we are going through, but it may be easier than you think. At Monterey Language Services, we stay positive thinking about our mission, our work, colleagues, friends, and clients. We’re working to stay positive and helpful during this difficult time, and we hope everyone else is able to find some positivity as well!

Interestingly, this specific order might not affect translators all that much. Most translators already complete most of their work remotely. Translation does not need to be done in person, so many translators live in their home country, or in a country whose language they translate into.

Interpreters are significantly and directly impacted by the COVID-19 virus and stay-at-home orders. While there are remote interpretation services (such as phone and video interpretation), a majority of interpreters still complete most of their work in person. This is no longer possible for most interpretation jobs. In order to support interpreters, LSPs and the interpreters themselves should work with clients to set up remote services, including video and phone interpretation. There are many online platforms available, which our interpreters are familiar with. They are ready to offer services using these platforms, so that they can still provide necessary interpretations in a safe way.

Of course, this stay-at-home order doesn’t just affect linguists. It affects everyone who works in the companies that provide language services: project managers, vendor managers, localization engineers, sales teams, etc. At Monterey Language Services, we have many years of experience in working from home. While some of our operations do take place in our physical Monterey office, we also have several employees who already work remotely full time.

Working from home presents a major lifestyle change for many people. It does require people to learn how to balance life and work and how to maintain their energy and strive to reach their goals at work. In our experience, when employees are working remotely, it is not important to track employees’ actions and tasks every minute of the day; micromanaging is not an effective strategy. Rather, it is about everyone having a common goal and working toward that common goal comfortably yet effectively. It’s about managing tasks rather than managing people.

Working effectively from home requires various technological resources. We optimize our technology to help us successfully work from home; we use our virtual private network (VPN) to share and access files, we keep open channels of communication via apps on our work phones, and more. We are working hard to remain available to our clients who need our services, and to provide as much support as we can to the translators and interpreters that we work with.

During times like these, staying connected is more important than ever. We need to support language professionals and continue providing translation and interpretation services, so that people can stay informed and connected throughout the world, even if this connection is remote!

It was quite interesting and enlightening to hear students’ stories. They come from all over the world and have incredibly diverse backgrounds, both personally and professionally. Many students have come to MIIS to begin their careers in the language industry, and show clear excitement for their current course of study and potential career paths. Other students already have years of experience in translation or interpretation, and have come to MIIS to hone their skills in a certain specialty or even to change their career trajectory entirely, for example by moving from a linguist to a project manager. Whatever the case may be, we were happy to connect with these talented people.

Students at MIIS, whether they are studying Conference Interpretation, Translation and Interpretation, or Translation and Localization Management all share a passion for languages and a keen desire to put what they are learning at school to work. We are glad to see that so many of these young professionals share our goal of bridging the world’s languages and cultures.

During the rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus, Monterey Language Services is poised for action – we have years of experience working remotely. For us, every challenge, downturn, or recession is an opportunity to reflect on what we can do to improve and move up to the next level. While most people and companies are focusing on the tasks at hand or cost cutting, we are thinking about what our contributions to the future would be and if we will be ready when our clients need us. Now is indeed a good time to think about all of this, and try to figure out how we can make better contributions to the environment we are in and to the people who we care about. We don’t lose faith in a crisis, and we believe those who survive the crisis will stand out when the crisis is over. To us, our career is a long journey.
