Keeping open channels of communication is of utmost importance. To ensure smooth communication, we are sure to leave notes and give explanations. We also have our process documented and written down. When we don’t know how to handle something, we can look to see if there is a relevant guide already written. If there is not, we can write one so that the next person with a similar problem will have more resources at their fingertips. Emails, text messaging, voice messages, and phone calls are ways to communicate and we choose our method depending on the urgency of the task at hand.

There are things that a single person can’t or doesn’t know how to handle alone. This is why we make it a point to always ask for help when we need it. This way, more challenging problems are dealt with sooner rather than putting them off or sweeping them under the rug. For example, we had to figure out our new tax responsibilities. Taxes are usually complex to deal with, but with several people working with different sources, we were able to check our information against each other. This led to clarity. During the process, we found different opinions, but it was that confusion that helped us identify the problem areas and showed us where we needed to focus and research in order to find the right answer.

Teamwork is important when there is too much work for one person, but that is not the only time teamwork matters. Another key aspect of effective teamwork is understanding everyone’s different roles and their strengths as an individual. Recently, for one graphic design project, we asked one of our team members who hadn’t worked on the project at all to read our instructions. A fresh pair of eyes on the project was needed to make sure that the instructions were clear and understandable to someone who hadn’t seen it before.

We always try to keep a positive attitude. Having the right state of mind can help turn a hectic, stressful day into a learning opportunity and a chance to solve new problems. For example, when we work with certain communities such as blind and deaf/ hard of hearing people, there are extra considerations we must think about. We must make sure that our work is compliant with the American with Disabilities Act. We needed to do some research on it, and took this as an opportunity to learn more about our legal system and about how to help different communities that we want to serve.

Staying positive can keep us energized, productive, and satisfied at work. Having a positive attitude also makes it a pleasure to work with our coworkers and clients, and that helps us build teamwork and respect, which in turn makes tackling challenges easier and more interesting. Last but not least, having passion for the projects encourages us to face challenges energetically. As interpreters, we are always interested in the development of interpretation technology, including the possibility of “robot” interpreters. About a year ago, we wrote about the potential of interpretation software and Microsoft’s efforts in that area. Their software is meant to analyze your speech, translate it and synthesize an audio track of your own voice speaking in the target language. (However, the software will first need to study your voice for several hours. Also, it gets around one in eight words wrong.)

So are there robot interpreters in our future? The answer is complicated. Perhaps one day, but not any time soon.

Interpretation software faces many difficulties, in each of its component stages. The first step is speech recognition, an area that has seen great improvement over the last few years. Nowadays, speech recognition figures in our daily lives – when we make a call and are asked to speak to a robot, when we are driving and asked to give commands to the stereo system, etc. Due to its wide range of applications, speech recognition is the most mature of the technologies involved, but even it still has a long way to go before it becomes truly reliable, as we are well aware from our experiences.

Next, the words spoken (and hopefully understood correctly by the system) need to be translated. While machine translation has certainly come a long way, anyone who has tried to use Google or Bing Translate on a foreign language website can testify that what comes out is not always even legible, much less an accurate translation of the source text.

Finally, the software needs to generate a spoken version of its translation through text to speech synthesis. This is possible with today’s technology, but even there many irregularities remain. Intonation, emphasis and other vocal indicators still do not carry over particularly well into artificial voice generators, creating voices that sound, well, robotic.

Beyond these basic limitations of the software, there also remain concerns about the nuances of both translation and interpretation. Questions about homonyms, about words that have multiple meanings depending on context, and of course the issue of cultural differences. There are many situations where even the most sophisticated software will be unable to guess the subtle nuances a speaker intends. A human interpreter does not just translate the words, but also the subtext and hidden meanings within them, judging not only the speaker, but also the audience.

“Reading the audience” to judge their understanding and reception of the translation is a vital skill for an interpreter. It is also one that becomes even more important in smaller, more intimate settings outside of presentations and conference interpretation. In a business meeting, at a doctor’s appointment, even in court, the message needs to be tailored based on the reactions of the listener.

Will this software eventually replace human translators and interpreters? We think not. And here are our thoughts:

The technique behind this revolutionary translation and interpretation software is called “Deep Neural Networks,” which mimics human brain behavior. It is, however, important to note that this breakthrough took place about only two years ago. On the other hand, the first translator, Saint Jerome, has translated the Bible into Latin in the 4th century. Human translators, as a result, have been around for thousands of years. This long historical foundation is unlikely to be replaced by machines.

As amazing and groundbreaking this technology may seem, errors still exists and much more improvement is required. The software is far from perfect. Researchers pointed out that the 1 in 7 or 8 words would be incorrect. It is not error-free. However, human interpreters are able to handle error right on the spot, hence more efficient.

Technology is a double-edged sword. While science can definitely increase our quality of life, it cannot fully replace human language specialists. Only human translators can identify the subtleties in languages. Only human interpreters can detect errors. Only human linguists are able to master the art of interpretation.

Some of the neologisms in English are based on people’s names.  Gerrymander comes from the name of a Massachusetts governor who redrew the state’s districts to favor his party in 1812, while the Diesel engine is named after its inventor.  More often, the doctrines and policies of particular statesmen lend their names to words ending in –ism, like Leninism and Thatcherism.

Sometimes, certain words in English can take on new meanings, whether alone or in combinations.  This occurs often in popular culture, as shown by the music genres blues, folk and rock ‘n’ roll, along with the movie genres comedy and horror.

Clearly, this tongue that arose in the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of England is now one of the ultimate mixtures in the world, and simply continues to evolve.  In fact, many languages have entities that regulate them, such as the Bangla Academy, which regulates Bengali; English has no official regulation.  In a way, English is no longer a sufficient name for the language.  It nowadays needs a name that emphasizes its fascinating mélange of words from around the world.

Why is it important that a translation service is located in Monterey Bay? Well, some of the finest language institutes are located in Monterey. The Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) and the Defense Language Institute (DLI) are specialized institutions. The DLI also does research in the Language field and provides linguistic and cultural instruction for the Department of Defense. MIIS provides 15 different fields of study within the umbrella of Language studies. Some of these include Social Change, Terrorism Studies, Environment, Business Studies, and Translation.

Along with these schools, California State University at Monterey Bay (CSUMB) has many students graduating with a degree in Japanese or Spanish. CSUMB also provides classes in American Sign Language (ASL) and introduces students to the deaf culture. Many of the students who graduate with these majors have also studied abroad and have been immersed in the culture with which they study. The same kind of culture can be found at MIIS and the DLI.

When customers say this to us, as Director of Translation for many years, I understand what they mean.

It is vital to get the correct meaning in translation. Even more important is to know who your author and target audience are. With this information, the experienced translator is able to make a judgment call.    

Then the translation can be written from the point of view and background of the original author. Whether from a CEO to employees; a department of communications to the general public; or a teacher to a student—the tone, style, and presentation will have to vary. This is a powerful difference that an excellent human translator can make!

With due respect to machine translation, I must say that in order to achieve the above requirements, excellent human translators are needed.  These are translators who have good sense, can analyze the text and the background, and successfully conduct research.

Sure, machine translation may be able to get a rough idea of what a passage is about and what languages are involved. But think twice whether it can boost your company’s image, or provide the quality that your company is looking for.      

If you are lucky, things might turn out right; but if a human has to edit or find bugs in the work done by machine translation, what could possibly happen?

– a waste time, resources, energy
– the need to scrap the work, and redo the entire project
– troublesome enough where you may want to smash the machine software!
