Located in beautiful Monterey, Monterey Language Services has been supporting the multilingual events of companies and visitors everywhere in California, from Monterey to the Silicon Valley, and beyond.

Imagine that you just arrived in a new country and you do not understand its official language very well. The excitement and apprehension you feel are equally intense. For many international and immigrant students, this is an experience they have gone through at least once in their lifetimes.

As the number of foreign or immigrant student increases in public schools, professional translators and interpreters are oftentimes required to assist the newcomers. While the demand for language services increases, the language services in California’s schools and districts lack consistent standards and guidelines. In some cases, these departments are not ready to serve the students and the families who speak different languages.

What Is The Cure?

According to the quality indicators released by the California Department of Education, some attributes a quality interpreter should possess include:

-The interpreter should have extensive understanding in both languages

-The interpreter should convey the messages clearly and accurately.

-The interpreter should be experienced in the fields of his or her qualifications

Why Is This Important?

Without clear and accurate communication, foreign or immigrant students may not be able to voice their concerns and opinions. This lack of clear communication may lead to cultural misunderstanding or even conflicts on campus. Unquestionably, quality translation and interpretation services are the key to quality communication. In the end, a more harmonious education environment can cultivate better citizens, and a more beautiful world will no longer be a dream. The power of language is greater than we think.

According to an article posted in The Australian, this has become the case. However, they further go on to explain that the movement to reclaim dying languages has grown in larger numbers. However, any attempt to save languages will have to grow in larger numbers in order to have a chance of success. The problem is the vast majority of people feel it is too difficult to learn another language, thus simply choose not to.

Despite this, there are still millions of people that share a passion for languages. On the Monterey Peninsula alone there are hundreds of students fully devoted to learning new languages. With this undeniable passion, the culture of languages will still be here to stay for a good while.

American Sign Language has its own set of cultural norms and its own community. The people that bridge the gap between the deaf community and hearing people are ASL interpreters. These people are highly skilled and trained specifically for this purpose.

One of the most beautiful, smooth, and expressionistic languages in the world completely disregards sounds coming out of your mouth; rather, it features the use of your hands, eyes, mouth shapes, and facial expressions.

What language is this? Sign Language of course! Or more specifically, American Sign Language, commonly referred to as ASL. To give you a little background on ASL, here are some stats:

Here in the United States there are approximately 600,000 deaf individuals, not counting people that classify themselves as hard of hearing. Of the 600,000, many of these people would identify themselves as part of the deaf community which has its own set of cultural norms and practices. Unfortunately, this whole culture and language is ill-known to most hearing people unless they have deaf relatives, friends, or have taken ASL classes during their schooling. This often leads to misunderstandings, false assumptions, and information being lost in translation.

As with all languages, interpretation is necessary when it comes to bridging the gap between hearing people and deaf people. However, being an ASL interpreter takes a lot more than just being bilingual. This means that just because someone can speak English and also fluently sign does not mean they are fit to be an interpreter, in fact, they have a long way to go.

So what’s it take to be an interpreter for ASL? Well, in the near future you will have to at least have a bachelor’s degree. This is because you need a wide variety of vocabulary and general knowledge in order to mix and match the sometimes rough translations from word to sign. After you have prepared yourself with education and experience, you can then take the NIC, or National Interpreter Certification. The NIC has three levels: the normal certification, the advanced certification, and the master certification.

Learning ASL in itself is a commendable and rewarding experience, but taking the extra step to becoming a certified interpreter literally pays off. These jobs range from part time to full time and offer a substantial amount of cash!

Siri, Apple’s new iPhone 4S app, is still struggling with picking up dialects and its ability to recognize language, so this application is long in the works. 

New technologies come up almost every day with ways to make life easier and more efficient, but may not cover the entire subject. For example, in the case of the new translation services the iPhone application Siri is looking to provide, they only offer services in six languages and dialects, American English, British English, Australian English, French, German and Japanese.

Here’s how the new translation technology is set to work, from the technology blog pcworld.com:

“The voice commands are recorded by the iPhone and then shipped to the cloud for interpretation. For example, when in Paris, a user’s iPhone could offer a translation to: “Quelle est la date d’aujourd’hui” and in response the user could reply in English, with the other person’s Siri translating the answer into their own language. The iPhone could use the GPS location to speed up translation by defaulting to the most likely language.”

Why are we called “Monterey Language Services”?  The answers from the audience included:

• We are located in Monterey County.
• John Steinbeck wrote a lot about Cannery Row in Monterey.
• Everybody knows Monterey.
• When asked where you live and you say Monterey, everyone knows which city you are referring to.

The answers began to branch out further:

• The Monterey area is famous for languages because of several renowned higher education language institutions, such as Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) and Defense Language Institute (DLI).
•  Monterey showcases the language history of the area.  Immigrants of almost every ethnicity worked in Cannery Row.
• ·Monterey has the unofficial title of the language capital of the world.

The name “Monterey Language Services” does have its significance to us, just like names such as Oxford, Napa and The Hague have international significance as authorities on academics, wine, and law.

Because of the name, and the fact that many of us are trained and educated here, we are driven to provide high-quality translation and interpretation services. We are committed to keeping high quality as the leading force in the translation and interpretation services industry.

The name “Monterey Language Services” inspires us to serve the community, as well as every other part of the nation and world.  With this commitment in mind, it is no wonder that the name Monterey Language Services attracted so much interest among the audience whom I met locally yesterday.

What a wonderful time to start a new year!  We wish everyone a successful year to come!

It is the time of the year when the Chinese people celebrate the full moon.  Speaking of the full moon, it plays a major role in folk tales.  It is when werewolves come to life.  A werewolf is of course a human who turns into a wolf. 

It is worth noting the origin of the word werewolf.  The first part of the word most likely derives from Old English wer, meaning “man”, thus the word plainly means “man wolf” (or “wolf man”, to match the movie title).  The translations in many other Indo-European languages agree with this root, like hombre lobo in Spanish and λυκάνθρωπος in Greek.

While most European languages are specific about the animal into which a human transforms, the Russian description of “werewolf” is more general.  For example, a Russian word used for “werewolf” is оборотень, which is closer to “shape shifter”. 

Shape shifter?  Folk tales the world over have frequently contained shape-shifting beings.  Our speculation might be that the Russians’ fear of wolves co-opted the idea of a shape-shifting being.  Could the use of this word in Russian be because of the differences between Russian culture and other cultures?

By the way, according to ethologist Valerius Geist of the University of Calgary, wolves are usually not a direct danger to humans as long as they are well fed, but if they start going hungry, they can turn aggressive.

Recently quite a few new friends have “liked” us on Facebook. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome our friends from all across the U.S. and let them know a little bit about who we are and what we do!

Our team is made up of graduates and students from the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) and other translation universities. We are language people and a solid provider of translation and interpretation services. Almost all of us have been in the language industry for our entire lives.

Bridging languages is something we do every single day. We consider ourselves a bridge, connecting two different languages and two different people. We put this idea in our logo, which represents us as the red apex, signifying the spirit which underlies our work.

Imagine: an interpreter is facilitating communication between doctors and patients in a hospital setting (medical interpretation), a translator is working on a PowerPoint presentation from English to French, two colleagues are working in an office to utilize their language skills to compose a blog… you get the picture. These are all happening simultaneously in Monterey Language Services. What a powerful experience this is we are encountering!

Learning foreign languages can open a lot of doors and lead to opportunities you never would have expected. Monterey Language Services is the place where all of these things come together and that is one major reason students love coming to work with us.
