In accordance with Assembly Bill (AB) 635 (Atkins, Chapter 600, Statutes of 2016) which was passed with little objection, and Senate Bill (SB) 165 (Atkins, Chapter 365, Statutes of 2019) which passed unanimously:

On August 31, 2021, the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) announced that Medi-Cal beneficiaries will be receiving increased interpreter support in several regions in California, including Contra Costa County. The aim of this was to ensure that all patients, no matter what language they speak, are able to receive the care that they deserve without having to worry about communication.

The project is called Medical Interpretation Pilot Project. Through the legislatively mandated project, medical interpreters in the following languages are needed or will be called upon. This is to cover Medi-Cal assignments in the area either on-site or remotely, either via phone or video conferencing.

Although the latter was played off for laughs, by comparing these two portrayals, we can see the differences between the two interpreters and what separates a professional interpreter from others.

The Interpreter 2005, Political thriller
Starring Nicole Kidman, this movie is about a UN interpreter who overhears people planning an assassination from her interpretation booth after hours. The producers did extensive research on conference interpreting as a profession, and in this movie you can see her portraying the work of a conference interpreter simultaneously interpreting both in the booths and in a meeting between dignitaries. According to IMDB, the movie is the first to have been filmed at the actual UN headquarters.

We see her portraying a professional interpreter with a great sense of responsibility in communication shown in her paying careful attention to the smallest nuances of language. She interpreted accurately despite a personal difference in opinion while at the same time protecting confidentiality.

Lost in Translation 2003, Comedy-drama
Everyone who has seen this movie probably remembers the Suntory commercial scene, where Bill Murray’s character struggles to understand the instructions of a passionate, machine-gun talking director despite having Japanese interpreter present. This scene is possibly the most humorous rendition of an unprofessional interpreter.

We noticed a few qualities lacking in this interpreter that are holding her back from doing a professional job. First, she appeared to have a lack of language ability that left huge gaps in the message she was trying to convey, and showed a lack of sensitivity to the frustration in the client when he was unable to understand her interpretation. The client shows a great deal of discomfort and confusion, there is still a language barrier that needs to be broken down.

– The Interpreter was a certified medical interpreter, CMI and CCHI precisely: Thanks to her professional mindset, the client was fully taken care of.
– Thorough communication between the doctor and patient was facilitated: The interpreter showed her dedication and ensured all messages were fully conveyed. The assignment was originally scheduled for two hours while the actual time spent interpreting was three hours.
–A willingness to serve: although the location was a bit far, the interpreter was willing to drive all the way to the hospital to make sure that someone was there to cover the assignment.

To expand on the sports post we published last week, we found some interesting information that looked into the life of a baseball interpreter. Most specifically, the relationship between Japanese interpreter, Mike Peters, and his client, Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Ryota Igarashi has blossomed into a great friendship.

Professionally, Peters acts as a bridge between Igarashi and the coaches, but he also plays the role of friend and even driver. Unfortunately, Igarashi’s career has taken a turn for the worst when he was sent down to the minor leagues after playing for the New York Mets. He then was traded to the Pittsburg Pirates, released, and eventually picked up by the Toronto Blue Jays. This relationship was strongest when Igarashi was a member of the New York Mets.

When the pitching coach of the Mets would go over the complicated game plan, Peters would frantically write down every detail and translate the notes to Igarashi later. Peters, who is half-Japanese, would teach Igarashi English, find good restaurants in each city the Mets traveled to, and showed him the way through confusing American airports. One time, when Peters couldn’t lead Igarashi through the airport, he texted Igarashi the words to say.

This type of personal relationship between interpreter and client is fairly common and can be beneficial in helping the client assimilate to American culture. It has been said that English is one of the most difficult languages to learn, but with interpreters who go the extra mile, it can make for a smooth transition.
