The information of this blog is based on our own research, with which AI then generated a video and voice-over for.

We have had an expert from medical interpretation services to review it.

This is an interesting look at what AI generates when given human input.

For example, it starts the video by asking the question: “Am I the only one who didn’t know the true weight of medical interpreters?”

And then it asks other questions like what it thinks patients will hear: “Can I afford this?” and “Will it hurt?”

These are questions that the AI came up with on its own while the rest of the content after that is what we input into the prompt.

We also included data from various sources such as a 2023 article from Palliative Medicine.

Researching data and having AI help to put it together into an emotional video really helps to show our point about how important interpreters are and what they carry on their shoulders. They are truly so important to our lives!

Transcript

Am I the only one that didn’t know the true weight of medical interpreters? These unsung heroes are more than just translators.

Imagine you’re in a hospital room, a patient gasps for air, the doctor explains three life altering options, and the interpreter, they’re the only one who truly understands both sides. Medical Interpreters face immense challenges. They hear questions like, can we afford this or will it hurt? They must navigate these with precision, staying objective, not swaying decisions.

Studies show even a minor translation slip can impact choices. They’re not just wordsmiths. They’re crucial mediators. Did you know interpreters often experience distress, overwhelm, guilt, loneliness and discomfort?

When facilitating palliative care conversations, “76% of interpreters found end of life conversations more stressful than others” [The emotional effects on professional interpreters of interpreting palliative care conversations for adult patients: A rapid review. Palliat Med. 2023].

They need our support, debriefing, mental health resources, because their role is more vital than we realize.

Next time you’re at a hospital, remember interpreters are the fragile bridge between fear and clarity; science and the human heart. Let’s support them as they support us.

Visual Storytelling

We provided our content to AI and let the AI work its magic. Here’s how the transformation unfolded:

Script Adaptation: AI transformed the blog into a script while maintaining the emotional depth of the narrative. AI’s understanding of context ensured key moments, like the patient gasping for air or the interpreter navigating life-or-death translations, were vividly demonstrated.

Scene Composition: AI automatically selected visuals that resonated with the content. Sterile hospital rooms, moments of intense decision-making, and the emotional toll of interpreters.

Audio Enhancements: Voiceovers and background music were added to match the video’s tone.

After uploading the script into AI, we selected:

Platform: “YouTube” (serious tone, fitting for healthcare content).

Voiceover: A professional, empathetic narrator (AI-generated).

Audience: General public

Duration: 2 minutes

The AI synced visuals to the script, adding captions and transitions where needed.

The Result

The final video was a blend of visuals and sound, perfectly encapsulating the essence of our blog. Key moments like the explanation of palliative care, tracheostomy, or aggressive treatment options were brought to life in a way that allowed viewers to feel the weight of the decisions.

Monterey Language Services explores the emotional and professional challenges medical interpreters face from navigating complex medical jargon to bearing the weight of traumatic situations.

Stay tuned as we continue exploring the boundaries of technology and storytelling, bringing more interpretation issues into the spotlight.

After a summer’s worth of hard work, we are proud to share our latest project: a video series diving into the charming world of Jay Chou’s iconic song, “Blue and White Porcelain.”

The series consists of three engaging parts:

Educational Video: An introduction to the key terms and concepts in the song, providing valuable insight into its cultural and historical references.

English Translation: A clear and thoughtful translation of the lyrics, making the poetic beauty of the song accessible to a broader audience.

ASMR Lyrics Reading: A soothing experience featuring an ASMR reading of the lyrics, allowing you to enjoy the lyrics in a unique and calming way.

Feedback Received

It is delightful to be able to engage our clients in a dialogue about culture, poetry and translation!

A client of Monterey Language Services shared a wonderful interpretation of Blue and White Porcelain of her own with us after reading our translation. She thought the song described the beloved landscape scenery of China as captured in blue and white porcelain pottery.

How did this story happen? Let us share how Monterey Language Services turned this beautiful piece into a fascinating project!

Spreading the Joy of Translation

The song “Blue and White Porcelain” by Taiwanese artist Jay Chou was released in 2007, so why did we choose it for our 2024 summer project? The idea didn’t come after a lot of planning or brainstorming, but as a sudden enlightenment.

At the start of the summer, Mei-Ling kept hearing “Blue and White Porcelain” in different places, so she decided to learn it. The more she sang the song, the more the beauty of the Chinese culture embedded in the lyrics resonated with her. Appreciating the poetry of the lyrics, Monterey Language Services decided to share the song with a broader audience by translating the Chinese lyrics into English.

Even non-Chinese speakers were able to join in this effort. In this video, Layla, a Spanish interpreter whose native language is English, read the translation as a poem. We then developed the reading further using ASMR techniques.

This story is an inspiring example of the power of translation to facilitate communication between people of different languages and cultures.

Collaborative Teamwork

This project is the product of collaboration between many colleagues and professionals. The end result surpasses what one person is capable of doing alone.

We started the project with Christoph, whose Chinese-to-English translation follows the syllable-count and meter of the original song and provided the foundation for what was to come. See our previous blog post for more information.

After the English translation video was complete, Shreya joined in. She suggested adding an educational video with eye-catching images to explain the key terms in the lyrics.

Layla thought the English translation was poetic, so she performed a reading in her clear and gentle voice. Her soothing tone inspired Shreya to suggest creating an ASMR version.

Finally, we wanted to create a complete sensory experience. Gary edited the background music and added sound effects such as rain falling on leaves, fire crackling, and pottery wheel clicking. These effects enhanced the video and made it atmospheric.

We are proud to mention that the younger generation also played a part. The background image of the ASMR video was drawn by De-Yi Lee, a junior high school student.

For this project, we have many people to thank, including the song’s original composer and singer Jay Chou and lyricist Vincent Fang. The song inspired a lot of creativity, which has made this project very enjoyable.

Through the collaborative efforts of many talented individuals, we were able to produce a video with a clear vision.

Video Editing

The combined video has three parts, and we created it in three different phases. As the videos consist of many different elements, video editing was required to combine and synchronize them. Smoothing the audio and creating seamless transitions between different segments were also fun to handle.

In the introduction to Parts One and Two, we used a stunning animated image of falling flower petals, while a blue and white bowl rotates in the background. On its own, the animation is beautiful, but when put it into our video, we felt that the speed was a little too fast.

The video is aimed to relax rather than energize, so we decided to slow the animation down, reducing the speed by half. The effect was immediate and magical. The animation was seamlessly integrated into the rest of the video.

From start to finish, we made sure that there are smooth transitions throughout the video. Our aim was to find a balance between joy and serenity as well as between majesty and simplicity, while maintaining a relaxing mood on the whole.

Translation Journey

Before translating the lyrics, we took the time to decide on our approach. We weren’t merely trying to produce a mechanical, one-to-one translation of the words. Instead, we aimed to create a singable English version that mirrored the rhythm and flow of the original song.

At the same time, we also wanted to faithfully convey the story told by the original lyrics. Therefore, every word went through a great deal of consideration and scrutiny.

To keep the translation accessible and easy for a non-Chinese audience to understand, some proper nouns had to be dropped. These included references to a Song dynasty style potter’s mark on a vase, and a town in Jiangnan, a region in China known for its romantic river scenery.

Both terms are richly evocative to a Chinese listener, but their dense cultural meanings could not be explained within the limitations of the syllable count.

For the Song dynasty reference, we simplified the phrase to “old potter’s mark”. Although “antique” may have been better at capturing the intended meaning, “old” was a better fit for the syllable count.

On the other hand, we omitted the reference to the Jiangnan region altogether. As Jiangnan’s literal meaning is “south of the river,” we gave up geographic specificity but kept its romantic associations by using the word “enchanted” in the same line.

After a process of painstaking deliberation, we are happy with the translation. It is both faithful to the original lyrics and singable to the original meter.

Interpretations of the Song

Song lyrics can be considered a form of poetry and can have many different interpretations. During the translation of the song, we had a debate about whether the speaker in the lyrics is addressing a blue and white porcelain vase or a human love interest.

One interpretation was that the speaker is an art lover recalling his encounter with a beautiful blue and white porcelain vase in Jiangnan. The art lover’s treasure hunt led him to discover the porcelain vase hidden behind a splashed-ink landscape painting among other works of Chinese art.

The other interpretation is that this is a love song that uses metaphors from Chinese art to describe his longing and the beauty of his lover.

Creative translation, also known as transcreation, of works such as “Blue and White Porcelain” can spark lively discussion, as there can be many different interpretations of the same text.

Individualized Education Program Meetings

School is a common experience that a lot of us have. For some, though, it’s not that simple of an experience. Imagine you’re having trouble keeping up in school and not learning at the same rate as others. What can you do? Sometimes doing your best can only take you so far. This is where IEPs come into play.

IEP is a legally binding process.

Individualized Education Programs are a very involved and careful process that involves not only the student, but their parents, and their teachers too. As you might be able to imagine, it’s important that everyone is able to understand each other for such a delicate and important process!

For interpreters, helping to interpret IEP meetings is a rewarding line of work that they actively look forward to. Seeing the smile on the child’s face or the parents’ face when they know that careful attention is being paid and that they can flawlessly communicate with each other without the barrier of language is a great feeling!

While there’s no set formula for the perfect interpreter, all our interpreters agree that experience plays a significant role.

Pedro and Noemi suggest that it typically takes about a year for interpreters to feel comfortable working in special education.

Familiarize yourself with the terminologies and the entire IEP process thoroughly so that you’re fully prepared for what’s to come!

It’s even better if you have a collection of examples ready to share, making it easier to explain and clarify information for parents.

Interpreters Need to possess comprehensive knowledge of the school system and more!

Susy specifically emphasizes the need for interpreters to possess comprehensive knowledge of various aspects, including the school system, resources of the school district, expectations of teachers, staff, and therapists, understanding the background of the family and the list goes on!

To do so, we recommend maintaining close ties with local school districts, which allows you to have a deeper understanding of the ever-evolving systems and resources. Following up with current standards is crucial!

Interpreters Need to have some knowledge of autism and speech development

Autism traits and speech development vary widely, so staying informed and updated on these topics proves immensely beneficial in delivering effective interpretation services. As Flower says, autism is a spectrum, so it is overall best to have some knowledge of it, otherwise someone who is not familiar with certain autism traits and/or the lack of speech development will probably be taken off guard.

Interpreters Need to take notes and/or ask the speaker to pause so they may interpret efficiently.

Interpreters must interpret the core message, and as such must take notes and/or ask the speaker to pause so they may interpret efficiently. While it’s true that interpreters usually bring out the core message, they also try to retain as many of the details and nuances as possible when interpreting for a speaker.

In order to do this, it’s important that the speaker doesn’t speak for too long so that the interpreters can be sure to repeat everything that they said in another language.

The job of an interpreter is to facilitate communication to the point that it’s almost as if the two sides are talking to each other. As such, omitting details is not something that interpreters try to do.

Interpreters Need to interpret in a register that the parents can understand!

Full inclusion refers to the total integration of a student with disabilities into the regular education program with special support. In full inclusion, the student’s primary placement is in the regular education class. However, the student can leave the class to receive related services such as speech or physical therapy.

For some interpreters, one challenge they find is that the language of the IEP’s various pathologists is sometimes at a register far above the level of understanding of the parents.

If that happens, the interpreters should try asking for permission to interpret in a register that the parents could understand.

Also, with COVID-19, the introduction of non-native English-speaking speech and language pathologists, may add another complexity in between IEP meetings.

This is why it’s very helpful for interpreters to have native-level strength in English while also being familiar with speech development. It makes communicating with the correct technical jargon much simpler and also easier to simplify everything for parents.

Our favorite moments despite these difficulties

Needless to say, there are so many cherished moments throughout the process, considering how closely interpreters work alongside the family.

Pedro fondly recalls being able to witness students’ progress and growth, or even celebrate their graduation from needing special education services.

Susy shared a heartwarming moment when the principal, who attended the IEP meeting, acknowledged her passion and dedication, which led him to choose her again for the school district meeting.

These accomplishments are truly what made our interpreters feel deeply satisfied and reaffirm the meaningfulness of their work!

Interpreters play a vital role in connecting people through different languages and cultures, shaping them into one harmonious community. Their importance cannot be understated, yet they often form a role that’s considered invisible.

To celebrate interpreters’ success stories, Monterey Language Services has put together a video showcasing the friendliness, professional, expertise, and different roles of our interpreters in shaping the harmonious community of our nation. You can view the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYxpYyoC7z0

Interpreters can spend years honing their skills to become subject matter experts in their fields, such as healthcare, education, or the legal sphere. Some have even worked in these fields as doctors, nurses, teachers, paralegals, and more before becoming language experts.

Interpreters believe in the fidelity and fairness of their work. Interpreters ensure that information is relayed accurately between the parties involved, making sure that nothing is omitted or erroneously said and everyone is on the same page. This is incredibly important in medical and legal settings.

Interpreters describe their work as rewarding and fulfilling. Many times, the act of interpreting contains an emphasis on helping those limited or non-English speakers or hearing disabled persons who are in need, such as to help with healthcare or education. This gives many interpreters great satisfaction in giving back to the community and keeps them looking forward to their work.

Monterey Language Services has the pleasure working with so many talented, devoted, professional interpreters, providing excellent service for your needs, whether your event is large, small, private, or a personal matter.

Thank you so much to our interpreters for working with us for all these years, and for the years to come.

Are your visitors traveling from overseas? Are they worried about the language barrier? Do they feel comfortable attending multilingual conferences where they hear languages they don’t understand?

At Monterey Language Services, we do not only provide interpretation services, but also interpretation AV equipment to facilitate understanding. We regularly provide transmitters, receivers, headset microphones, and headsets for simultaneous interpretation events. Transmitters and headset microphones are for the interpreters, and the receivers and headsets are for your visitors. Within seconds, the equipment can be set up and adjusted to your visitor’s comfort.

By using our equipment, the speakers do not need to pause for the interpreters to catch up— instead, they can keep speaking. Simultaneously, the interpreters relay the information to your visitors in their native language. This way, your visitors wearing the receivers and headsets can receive information via the interpreter. At the same time, the audience of the main language does not hear the interpretation and can better focus without any distractions. As a result, the communication at your event will be more effective, and the speech and/or conversations will proceed smoothly and seamlessly.

When we receive a request for interpretation at an event, we gather all relevant information for the event: date, location, language, number of attendees, anticipated length, subject matter that are required for the work.

For smaller events, we provide receivers and headsets for the audience, where the interpreters are able to follow the audience and keep mobility from one location to another. For larger events, we use Interpreter Consoles, where the interpreter stays in a booth to relay information to a larger number of event-goers who speak different languages. We also use a hybrid mix of portable equipment with fixed stations. Please feel welcome to email us to find out more at info@montereylanguages.com

Just as we provide the most suitable interpretation equipment to fit different situations, we ensure to assign interpreters who are experts in the field of your event. For effective interpretation, especially simultaneous interpretation events, multiple interpreters are often needed and we send only those who are knowledgeable in the subject matter. For example, conference interpreters usually specialize in a particular subject, whether it is IT, Business, International Tech Reseller meetings, Product Training, Marketing, or Finance, etc.

We’ve provided services for top tech companies with our portable equipment including for visitors from Latin America and Asia. We’ve provided for large marketing and conference events with interpretation console equipment. Our methodology works. Our easy-to-use and effective equipment, knowledgeable interpreters, and detailed planning rise high to each and every occasion. We owe it to our clients to provide the very best, after all.

Here at Monterey Language Services, we have many long-time customers who use our services, such as for medical interpretation or translation for monthly newsletters and the like. On the other hand, we often have first-time customers who have never needed to hire translators or interpreters before, and would like more information on the subject before requesting our services. Today’s blog post will be centered on common questions new clients have for language service providers.

Aren’t translators and interpreters the same?

This is a very, very common misconception. Outside of the language service provider sphere, “translator” and “interpreter” can be used interchangeably in most discussions. Such as: “We’ll need a translator at the board meeting” versus “We’ll need an interpreter at the board meeting.”

But just what is the difference between those terms? Simply enough, both “translator” and “interpreter” refer to someone who conveys information from one language to another; more specifically, a “translator” works with written words, while an “interpreter” works with spoken words. Some people are only translators, some are only interpreters, and others are both.

Can’t any bilingual person be a translator/interpreter?

A very common misconception (in the workplace especially) is “Billy is bilingual, so he can handle this project and translate/interpret for us.” Just because a person is bilingual (or trilingual or more, even), does not mean that they have the training required to be a proper translator or interpreter.

Imagine that “Billy” speaks Spanish at home, but grew up going to school where the primary language of instruction was English. While there’s a chance he can talk about any subject at home with his family members, a likely scenario is that he will know more about biology in English terms rather than Spanish terms. Unless the conversation were very simple, such as general conversation for travel or something similar, it would be very difficult for Billy to translate or interpret something.

Translators and interpreters go through rigorous training for their respective crafts, and have expanded their vocabularies enough to compensate. Proper translators and interpreters have high-level certifications as well.

I know a translator/interpreter who did Assignment X, why can’t they do Assignment Y?

In the language services industry, some translators and interpreters can fall under the category of “subject matter experts.” These people have trained to not just be general translators or interpreters, but have polished their skills to cater to certain types of work.

Take “Billy” from above, for example. Imagine he’s become passionate for being an interpreter, and his other interest in biology spurs him to an interest in medical interpretation. After enough study, focus, and—of course—certification, he becomes a proper medical interpreter and specializes in speaking between doctors and patients about surgeries. He might be able to do general interpretation as well, but because of his deep specialty, he might have trouble if he suddenly needed to interpret for, say, a lawyer discussing a lawsuit.

Just like how doctors and lawyers require separate studies, medical interpreters and legal interpreters also require focused study in their area of expertise. They may have skills that overlap, but generally, it’s best to rely on separate translators/interpreters who are subject matter experts rather than the same one for every single job.

Wouldn’t machine translation work well enough?

Short answer: No.

Long answer: Machine translation can certainly help a translator do their work. Computer-assisted translation tools (called CAT tools in the industry) can keep a handy glossary of terms for the translator, and have the memory to provide reference for older, similar translations.

But if we rely only on machine translation, any number of problems can happen. Machines think very differently than humans and might misinterpret context, homonyms, word register, and so on. Computers may be able to perform complex mathematical calculations, but the human brain is hardwired for language. Put simply, a translation from a human is going to sound a lot more natural—and have fewer mistakes—than a simple machine translation.

Why does a translation need proofreading? Shouldn’t the translator be enough for that?

Speaking of “mistakes,” mistakes happen. To err is human, after all. Translators need proofreaders for the same reason that a journalist, book writer, or a lawyer needs one. Mistakes concerning facts, grammar, spelling, etc. can easily be made by any sort of writer, and the same goes for a translator.

Having a second pair of eyes does wonders for any written work. A proofreader for a translation can catch errors in spelling, word register, a forgotten period or comma—anything that might have slipped through the cracks. If you want a translation to be as polished as possible, having a proofreader is essential.
