Whether you’re conducting an international conference, a training event, a meeting, a tour, or any number of things, chances are that you’ll be working with an international or multi-lingual crowd. There are a lot of different ways you can go about these situations, but by far, the most effective and prevalent method is hiring interpreters to provide simultaneous interpretation. Monterey Language Services offers not only interpretation, but the equipment behind it to ensure that your event goes smoothly.

Imagine that you’re at an event. All your participants are eagerly awaiting to hear from you. Your presenters are anxious to begin their presentation. In that moment, they’re all focused on the content of the presentation and have an expectation that the equipment provided will work. That’s why it’s extremely important to have the right kind of tools for the job, and with Monterey Language Services, that’s exactly what you will get. We have worked all sorts of events and have a wealth of experience making sure that our equipment will be the right fit for the job.

The size of venues can differ, so whether you’re trying to reach someone in the front row or the back row, it’s important that your equipment has range. In particular, our transmitters and receivers allows participants and interpreters to freely move around a large range of area, up to 150 feet, maximizing audio quality while eliminating the worry of ever falling out of range.

It also comes with ample different channels, allowing for increased flexibility for switching between languages as necessary. This is perfect for situations where you need simultaneous interpretation for multiple languages.

We’ve all been there when you’re giving a presentation and then there’s feedback from the microphone. It’s not only disruptive, but very nerve-racking for the presenter. To prevent this from happening, it’s important to make sure that all the equipment being used correctly interact with each other and have high synergy. A Conference Room walk-through is important. The best part is we are here locally if you plan to come to Monterey, California for your events! All the trouble shooting if any can be taken care of right here locally before the start of your conference.

For interpretation events, we provide transmitters, receivers, interpreter consoles, interpreter booths, headsets, etc. Our interpretation equipment is compatible with both FM and digital equipment. Regardless of radio or digital, we will have you covered. If you already have AV equipment, we can easily have everything connected to our interpretation system and running in no time.

If you don’t have AV, that’s not a problem at all. We can provide all AV support and equipment including mixers, speakerphones, lapel or hand or table top conference microphones, technicians, any necessary cables, and more..

If you’re considering an interpretation event, consider Monterey Language Services. We have affordable prices, great equipment, and seasoned interpreters. We will make sure that your event goes off without a hitch! The best is we are here locally in Monterey California!

Translation and interpretation activities are a vibrant part of our daily lives. In addition to diplomatic encounters and international business & conferences, everyday people in our own community need them all the time.

What moves Monterey Language Services forward every day is exactly this: providing translation and interpretation services to serve local, national, and global communities.

Community interpreting in a very basic sense already involves a lot of different settings, including public hearings, community workshops, doctors’ visits, parent school meetings, legal communications between lawyers, the court, and witnesses, and so on. Monterey Language Services serves Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Benito Counties and beyond.

Monterey Languages Services also covers all of California, including major cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, San Jose, and San Diego. We also often provide services in smaller communities, like West Goshen, Alpaugh, Allensworth, Le Grand, El Centro, and many others.

Our service areas continue across the country as well, to Idaho, Texas, Michigan, Washington, D.C., New York and more. When we receive translation and interpretation requests from around the globe, for example from Italy, Japan, Korea, Latin and South America, it’s a real thrill and creates a great sense of contributing to global communication! Our role and mission in this profession have been completely fulfilled.

At Monterey Language Services, translation and interpretation services are offered in all languages, so we can always help make sure communication happens between people who need it. When we serve communities, we believe it’s our responsibility to send the best interpreters possible, based on their skill, experience, credentials, professionalism, and passion to serve.

It’s human nature that people are community-minded, and we all want to cooperate and serve to work towards a better world. That’s why we treasure each and every opportunity to serve communities, and it’s an honor to do what we are doing as a service provider of translation and interpretation!

Mobile apps are the latest trend in hip, modern technologies and a popular direction for large companies and young startups alike. Apps can be easily downloaded and installed by individual users across the world. Portable, widely available, interoperable, and (mostly) free, they are immensely popular across a wide spectrum of customers.

There are many different kinds of apps, apps marketplaces and app stores: mobile games apps, apps that serve as extensions of websites for mobile devices, apps that link to and control devices. Apps can provide an entire service by themselves, present a new, portable form of a business’s existing services, or be part of a physical product.

Mobile messaging apps users now number in the hundreds of millions around the globe due to ease of use and a multitude of free service offerings. Whatsapp (based in Mountain View, CA) has 450 million monthly users, with Line (Japan, 350 million registered users) and WeChat (Shenzhen, China, 272 million monthly users) not far behind. Many mobile messaging apps are also major players in the mobile game apps arena. You can use these mobile messaging apps to send and receive text messages, record and send audio files, video chat, send photos, and even purchase sticker, music, and game add-ons.

Other popular mobile apps include free hotel-booking and last minute hotel-booking apps for making reservations. Hotel booking mobile apps are available on Android and iOS, a few on Windows Phone or Blackberry.

No matter what their purpose, mobile apps are especially convenient in that they can be easily distributed to customers worldwide, as long as their interface is completely and correctly translated.

We at Monterey Language Services have the technical capabilities to do so, using our global localization platform. Unlike other translation companies, we can handle localizing the entire app, its API, system and interface. We ensure that the mobile app and all its functions are recreated in the target language of your choice. All you have to do is sit back and have fun with your mobile app! Monterey Language Services takes care of the rest.

In this blog post we interviewed David Thomson, who is currently a second-year graduate student in the International Policy Studies program at Monterey Institute of International Studies. Fluent in English, Spanish, and Mandarin, David exemplifies how language learning has opened multiple doors for him.

A Passion for Languages

Born and raised in California, David showed a great interest in language learning since young age. While studying Spanish literature and culture in San Jose State, he has spent time abroad in Madrid, Spain. In his junior year in college, he picked up Mandarin as a minor and went to Beijing University to sharpen his Chinese. These life experiences have given him different perspectives on international issues, which eventually led him to study policy with the focus in trade between the United States and China. David mentioned that “being able to speak another language not only introduces me to a new culture, but also teaches me how people think and behave in that specific culture.” He also joked about how being able to speak both Spanish and Mandarin allowed to “survive” in Spain, Mexico, and China during many unexpected situations.

David feels very fortunate to possess multiple language skills in both academic and professional fields. His academic specialty in trade inevitably requires him to gather both countries’ situations and argument in order to draft a strong analysis. As a result, his ability to read research journals and articles in Chinese has benefited him greatly. David mentioned that a paper can never be “well-rounded” unless both sides of the arguments have been touched upon. In the professional area, David’s academic experience and language skills have helped him land an internship with the U.S. Department of Commerce in Shanghai, and he will continue the internship in San Jose this coming semester.

Benefits of Leaning a Foreign Language

There are many benefits to learning a foreign language. Potential career paths not only include translation and interpretation, but countless others in business and in policy, like David’s. In addition, learning a foreign language can lead to a magnificent journey in a foreign country, the ability to watch foreign movies without the aid of subtitles, and the opportunity to make friends all over the world.

What makes a quality medical interpreter? The previous blog post pointed out the balance between compassion and professionalism. In reality, medical interpretation requires more than those skills. Cultural understanding and sensitivity, along with compassion and professionalism, are equally crucial in the makings of a successful medical interpreter.

A Real Life Example

The book “The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down,” written by Anne Fadiman, describes the cultural and medical misunderstandings that occurred between a Hmong refugee family and the American healthcare system. Lia suffered severe epilepsy, which causes frequent seizures. Hmong people believe that seizures happen because a spirit catches the person, whereas American doctors identified the imbalance of chemicals as the cause of seizures. Without any medical interpreters, the family could only rely on the help of relatives for informal interpretation. While American doctors prescribed appropriate medicine for Lia, the family never gave Lia the right dosage because they did not understand the doctors’ instructions. Moreover, the Hmong community felt skeptical of modern medicine. As the cultural misunderstanding and confusion continued, Lia’s condition worsened.

Lessons Learned

Imagine how differently Lia’s life would turn out if a qualified medical interpreter was in place. Language skills are the basic expertise a medical interpreter should possess, but a professional interpreter should also have a rich understanding of both cultures. In addition, the interpreter should be respectful and sensible towards cultural behaviors, which can easily lead to misunderstanding between the medical providers and the families. When such occasion rises, the interpreter should react quickly and notify each party (usually with: “interpreter explanation”) and then explain the behavior as a result of cultural practices. For instance, doctors may not able to understand why family member cannot make important decisions on the spot. The interpreter should explain to the doctors that in some cultures, family members need to get together in order to make important decisions.

In the complex environment of healthcare settings, medical interpreters should be not only the communicator of different parties but also the bridge of different cultures.

During the holiday, we saw an inspiring movie, Dancing Across Borders, about a young Cambodian dancer who came to the United States at the age 18 to learn classic ballet. We cannot help but notice that he found comfort through a Cambodian interpreter and a Cambodian family that the interpreter introduced to him. This reminds us again of the importance of interpreters assisting in communication.

The story below is shared by Ringo Li who came to this country as a young immigrant.

Imagine that you just arrived in a new country and you do not understand its official language very well. The excitement and apprehension you feel are equally intense. For many international and immigrant students, this is an experience they have gone through at least once in their lifetimes.

As the number of foreign or immigrant student increases in public schools, professional translators and interpreters are oftentimes required to assist the newcomers. While the demand for language services increases, the language services in California’s schools and districts lack consistent standards and guidelines. In some cases, these departments are not ready to serve the students and the families who speak different languages.

What Is The Cure?

According to the quality indicators released by the California Department of Education, some attributes a quality interpreter should possess include:

-The interpreter should have extensive understanding in both languages

-The interpreter should convey the messages clearly and accurately.

-The interpreter should be experienced in the fields of his or her qualifications

Why Is This Important?

Without clear and accurate communication, foreign or immigrant students may not be able to voice their concerns and opinions. This lack of clear communication may lead to cultural misunderstanding or even conflicts on campus. Unquestionably, quality translation and interpretation services are the key to quality communication. In the end, a more harmonious education environment can cultivate better citizens, and a more beautiful world will no longer be a dream. The power of language is greater than we think.

Visiting Steinbeck’s house was beyond edifying. This Victorian-era abode gave a sense of what it was like to grow up in the early twentieth century, almost to the point of making a person feel as if he is a young John Steinbeck.

We were not only visiting a historic landmark, but also having a literary experience by being in the house. A quote that we think really does a good job summing up Steinbeck is what he said while accepting the Nobel Prize for Literature: “Literature is as old as speech. It grew out of human need for it and it has not changed except to become more needed.” The first thought that came to mind was that if we were to replace “Literature” with “Translation” or “Interpretation”, the quote would sound great as well.

We started to debate who the greatest American author is who can be compared to Shakespeare, Molière and Cervantes. We came to the conclusion that Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway and John Steinbeck are the ones who have come the closest.

Discussing literature while having lunch in John Steinbeck’s childhood home puts one in the right frame of mind to feel compelled to come back to the office and write a blog about this encounter with one of America’s greatest authors.

Not only was Steinbeck a great author, but he also represented the heart and soul of this region of California. In his novels, Steinbeck looked at the ethnic makeup of Monterey County, at the lives of different groups of people, and at the significance of the agricultural industry in central California’s economy.

His novel East of Eden is set in Salinas, while Cannery Row is set in Monterey. These novels show Steinbeck’s relation to the environment in which he grew up, and even give a sense of the cities today. In looking at the best and worst of central California, John Steinbeck showed himself to be probably the best that the region has ever had to offer. There will very likely never be another like him.
