As another year passes behind us and a new one begins, may nature’s beauty surround you and may your life be filled with all the blessings the universe has to offer.

The universe is filled with wonders big and small, from a single grain of sand to the sun in the sky. Nature’s beauty is all around us – the endless blue horizon, an ancient rock, palm trees rising from the sand.

Other miracles of life are invisible: do we see the wind, or just feel its warm breeze? The clouds in the sky are too high to touch, but we feel their rain. Everything is connected and part of the same wonder, even us.

If at first you don’t see life’s blessings, don’t be discouraged: remember that like the wind they are all around, and you feel their cool breeze! Yes, it’s important to be at peace with our environment and the people we are with. Let’s be patient, communicative, considerate, and think of others – because everything is part of the same harmony.

As interpreters, it’s our mission to bridge the gap of different ideas, backgrounds, languages, and cultures. Being an interpreter is a noble calling, we are blessed by those we have served!

In the same spirit, let’s all once again remind ourselves: to be communicative to bring people closer together and let them see that we were never that far apart to begin with.

From the team of Monterey Language Services, happy holidays and may 2017 bring you peace and prosperity.

The future of English is unclear, however, that won’t stop us from taking some educated guesses about what it could turn out to be.

First, it’s probably safe to say that our language will continue to not only evolve, but also continue to mix and meld with other languages. We’ve all heard the term “Spanglish” which is the slang word for the end product of someone attempting to speak one or the other, but then certain terms are replaced when the correct word is not known. Naturally, this is most commonly spoken in high school classrooms.

We think of this informal process of mixing languages as fun and games even though, realistically, other languages being smelt together with English is very likely. There are over 80 countries which have English listed as one of if not the only official language. Like most, English is not set in stone. New dialects and slang will continue to sprout and eventually “bridge the gap” between our English and other languages it comes in contact with.

Of course, no drastic changes are bound to appear for a while. Still, we will be able to see slight changes among the English language in our lifetimes. Each generation brings new words (Or old words with different meanings) to the table, which keeps us on our toes. One example of this we have all experienced can be found when taking a look at one of our most common forms of communication here in the states: text messaging. “LOL” is no longer an awkward sounding nonsense word; instead we see this is “Laughing Out Loud.” Others such as “BRB” for Be Right Back, “SMH” for Shaking My Head, and “OMW” which stands for On My Way, are all commonly used in texts between virtually anybody.

Interpreters provide the bridge for language barriers to be crossed.

Fact: In order to interact with any person, one must have proper common ground.

Fact: People need social interaction to fully be a part of society.

Fiction: It is difficult to connect with someone of a different language origin.

Even if you don’t believe these to be true, it is still a fascinating concept to think about. Relating this to the world of interpreting and translating, it is safe to say that the role that interpreters provide in society would be similar to the role a bridge provides. Both connect two separate areas (The bridge connecting land mass, while the interpreter connects two separate languages)

There would be no possible way to consider unifying all languages into one. There is simply too much culture and barriers in the way to do this. Also, this seems drastic and extremely unreasonable. This is where an interpreter comes into play. The interpreter allows whoever may be crossing their bridge (whatever language that may be) to effortlessly be able to access the other side of things, helping find the ultimate goal: understanding.

Due to the varying differences of language, the interpreter’s bridge would have many rises and falls, mixed in with some parts that open up and split apart. However, this bridge would be the most elegant and sturdy that could ever exist. This is due to the fact that this world has been formed and shaped based on the varying languages we as a people have.

<g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="https://www.montereylanguages.com/blog/interpreters-bridge-the-language-gap-1477"></g:plusone>
