Interpreters play a vital role in connecting people through different languages and cultures, shaping them into one harmonious community. Their importance cannot be understated, yet they often form a role that’s considered invisible.

To celebrate interpreters’ success stories, Monterey Language Services has put together a video showcasing the friendliness, professional, expertise, and different roles of our interpreters in shaping the harmonious community of our nation. You can view the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYxpYyoC7z0

Interpreters can spend years honing their skills to become subject matter experts in their fields, such as healthcare, education, or the legal sphere. Some have even worked in these fields as doctors, nurses, teachers, paralegals, and more before becoming language experts.

Interpreters believe in the fidelity and fairness of their work. Interpreters ensure that information is relayed accurately between the parties involved, making sure that nothing is omitted or erroneously said and everyone is on the same page. This is incredibly important in medical and legal settings.

Interpreters describe their work as rewarding and fulfilling. Many times, the act of interpreting contains an emphasis on helping those limited or non-English speakers or hearing disabled persons who are in need, such as to help with healthcare or education. This gives many interpreters great satisfaction in giving back to the community and keeps them looking forward to their work.

Monterey Language Services has the pleasure working with so many talented, devoted, professional interpreters, providing excellent service for your needs, whether your event is large, small, private, or a personal matter.

Thank you so much to our interpreters for working with us for all these years, and for the years to come.

Take a look at this amazing video with Disney’s impressive cast singing the localized versions of “Let it Go” from Frozen in English, French, German, Dutch, Mandarin, Swedish, Japanese, Latin American Spanish, Polish, Hungarian, Castilian Spanish, Catalan, Italian, Korean, Serbian, Cantonese, Portuguese, Bahasa Malaysian, Russian, Danish, Bulgarian, Norwegian, Thai, Canadian French, and Flemish.

Watching the Disney multi-language video reminds us of the exciting times that our professional voice actors have brought to a variety of media. Monterey Language Services had quite a few opportunities to work on projects of this caliber. In one case, we formed a large team of voice-over talents to bring voices to multiple roles in an environmental preservation video. We were overdubbing the video from English to Mandarin Chinese. The dialogue and stories were told by various characters. village elders, youth, village leaders, national corporate executives, and local businessmen spoke about preserving their environment and the movement towards modernization.

The story was rich and compelling, so having the same actor voice multiple parts would not have given the characters as much depth. In light of this, a large team of Mandarin voice-over talents was brought in to a local recording studio to voice more than a dozen roles. The array of voices one after another was similar to the relay of different singers in the Disney multilingual video – very exciting and interesting!

We made sure that the entire production process, which required writing up a transcript, translation, voice selection, recording, and post recording engineering, was of a professional quality and thus the final product was a proud presentation that both our client and the end audience could enjoy!

How do we ensure our children and our children’s children will still have clean air to breath, the beauty of the Great Lakes, and the breathtaking ocean views from our Monterey Peninsula? How does the way we conduct business affect our air quality? Where does wastewater end up? Are we depleting all of our potable water resources? Are companies properly handling hazardous waste? Where will we put our solid waste in 50 years? Are civil engineers properly considering environmental issues in tribal lands? These questions and many more are being studied by professionals in environmental science, chemistry, and environmental justice.

Today, we all must think about our impact on earth. Increasing climate change and accumulating waste threaten our survival. We must find more sustainable methods. We need to support laws that help protect our environmental health, which will, in turn, help our public health.

Whether you feel like helping save Mother Earth, decrease our dependence on foreign oil, or fight for our sea friends, even the sharks, you need to get your message out in more than one language. We at Monterey Languages Services can help carry your environmental message in different languages with our conference translation and interpretation services. Please feel free to contact us for more information.

Today, a hot topic around the world is environmental sustainability. The terms such as sustainable business, ethical business, resilient business, green business, conscious capitalism, collaborative consumption, sustainable brands… etc have been created to keep up with the new ways the business world explains their environmental endeavors. But exactly what do these terms mean?

How do translators deal with these terms? How do they communicate the newest information on the issue in terms that everyone can understand? How do you build a “green building” in Thailand without the building being painted green?

Freya Williams, a columnist from the Guardian Professional, noticed the miscommunication when she visited multiple business conferences.

“…the lack of alignment on a common [sustainable business] language can lead to meetings in which some participants are left wondering what exactly they are discussing, while others are talking at cross purposes, and some are trying express ideas for which a name may not yet exist.”

In a conference as such, interpreters/translators have to convey the same level of vagueness or specificity or pragmatism, as the situation may be. Translators have to recognize the term coined in the target language, which might tend to be a literal translation of the English term. Hence, translations to these concepts may be just as vague as expressed in the original language.

New words are made to keep up with the changing times, but not everyone is on the same page with these changes. Perhaps it’s time for the world community to work together on the definition of the new vocabulary, so everyone can truly understand and communicate in an environmental conference.
