How beautiful! Thank you for this project and for this description of the depths to which A I cannot reach.
I guess, the questions we ought to ask at this point are: Will AI be able to “deterritorialize” language (borrowing Deleuze and Guattari’s terms)? Will it be able to write from within? Would it be able to translate conventional languages into unconventional ones and vice-versa?
The answer is: I doubt it.
AI may be able to transpose words, or even transfer ideas. But is this the only purpose and only outcome of translation and interpretation?! Of course not! We as “translators/interpreters” carry the seeds of birthing (as Plato would put it) in our work. We do not just transpose and transfer, we transform thought, we are the inseminators of new ideas, new worldview, new civilizations, even new humans.

It was an honor to represent MLS and serve my community to close the language gap and remove the language barrier in order to allow access to such important public school board meetings where decisions, that affect every day life schedules -such as student class start times- are made. Monterey Language Services was great to work with. Yes, we had interesting discussions about English expressions with double meanings and intentions of sarcasm! They responded with flexibility and promptness, and answered my questions fully and professionally every time. I highly recommend them.

I agree! A translation made by a machine will never be the same as of a human. It is the same concept as baking a cake. Passion, time and effort is put into baking a cake, makes it taste that much better.
The same, passion, time and effort is put in when translating something, a machine definitely cannot do that!

Speaking of literal translations, I don’t know if anyone’s heard the story (possibly true, possibly not) of the first time that they attempted natural word processing. They took the phrase “the spirit is strong but the flesh is weak” and translated it word-to-word into Russian. When they back-translated it, they got “the vodka is strong but the meat is rotten”.

Very interesting article, with a great deal of insight. I agree with Emily. I think only when you know a language of a country you can truly understand its culture.
